Justin Vulliamy uon, London. An important and rare gold key wind pair case pocket watch possibly made for George IV whilst Prince of WalesDate: Circa 1778-80Movement: Gilt full plate cylinder, pierced balance cock engraved with foliate scrolls, a grotesque mask and two dolphin heads, diamond end stone, silver regulation with serpent tongue indicator, square baluster pillarsDial: White enamel, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track with Arabic 5 minute markers, diamond set fleur de lys hour and poker minute handCase: Polished inner numbered 139, finely engraved outer with applied blue enamel panel bearing monogram 'PW' beneath a coronetSigned: Movement signed Justin Vulliamy, inner case stamped 'PM' for Peter MounierSize: 47mmFootnotes:The current lot is believed to have possibly been made for George IV when he was Prince of Wales. Upon the back is the Prince's coronet and the cypher PW within an oval medallion of polychrome enamel. The coronet is in gold, red and white, the cypher in gold, these on a dark translucent royal blued engine turned ground within a white enamel border. The medallion is within a border of radiating flutes with a further engraved border of continuous ovals interrupted by engraved foliate decoration.George Augustus Frederick was born in 1762 so it is believed that this watch was made for him at some point in his late teens. By eighteen his life style and extravagant living had already become an embarrassment to his family and it is said that he would give watches in settlement of gambling debts. Engraved on the movement is 'uon', Vulliamys cryptic numbering code which Vaudrey Mercer attempted to decipher in the Antiquarian Horology Volume XIV September 1983. If Mercer's interpretation is correct the code translates to number 347. Provenance:19 February 1959 Lady A Babington - Anne nee Egerton (1908-1964), wife of Geoffrey Babington, daughter of the 4th Earl of Ellesmere. Lady Babington confirmed in the 1950s that the watch was the property of the late Mr James Robert Anning who was connected for over 40 years with the London and County Bank Ltd, then the Westminster Bank Ltd. It came to him through his first wife's family whose grandfather, it is understood, was closely associated with George IV when Prince of Wales.T P Camerer Cuss CollectionIllustrated:Cedric Jagger, Royal Clocks,, Robert Hale, 1983, plates 119-120 page 88 with textT P Camerer Cuss, The Country Life Book of Watches, Country Life, 1967, colour plate IIIT P & T A Camerer Cuss, The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches, AC C 1976, colour plate 7For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Richard Wagner - an honorary award for naval aviators Richard Wagner - an honorary award for naval aviatorsTwo fully sculptured, fighting eagles in bronze, both screwed together, similar to the representation on the goblet of honour. The black, octagonal wooden pedestal with a dedication plaque on the front (one nail is missing): "Dem Sieger - im Luftkampf - 14. Jan. 1917 - Flugmaat Wagner". Overall height approx. 26 cm. The screw fitting is loose, slightly over-polished, with a beautiful patina and verdigris. Extremely rare find. Moreover, probably one of the first honorary awards as it was only instituted in January 1917. Until the end of the war, fewer than 100 awards were issued due to the lack of both materials and funds. Also includes a challenge trophy in the form of a silver cup engraved with six names from 1929 to 1934. Mark of fineness "800", height approx. 16.5 cm, weight approx. 192 g. Wagner's Iron Cross 1st Class (silver with magnetic iron core) in the presentation case. Richard Wagner (1893 - 1935): when war broke out in 1914, the qualified engine builder enlisted in the 1st naval aviator division, serving as flight instructor, and flew several missions, including the Aegean Sea. From 1923, he worked as a test pilot, later as head test pilot for Dornier in Marina di Pisa/Italy and Friedrichshafen. He set several aviation world records with the Dornier Wal flying boats. During a test manoeuvre over Lake Constance, the maiden flight of the legendary Do X was unexpectedly successful. In 1935, Wagner was killed while landing a Dornier Wal on Simssee in Upper Bavaria.
