It was built during the Kingdom of the Lombards in Italy (568-774 A.D.) on the Via Flaminia, next to the banks of the River Clitunno. It is constructed from ancient Roman building materials, which made Renaissance scholars believe it must have been the remains of the Temple to Jupiter Clitumnus as mentioned by Pliny.
