An historically significant ‘Great Escape’ owned Georgian silver snuff box inscribed with ‘Thomas Green RAF Stalag Luft 3’, the box by Ed Smith, Birmingham 1834, with engine turned decoration and floral applied front, the gilt interior with inscription to underside of lid, 6.5cmW 67.9g Provenance: Squadron-Leader Thomas Kirby Green was shot by the Gestapo in 1944 after escaping from Stalag Luft III as part of the greatest escape attempt during the war. He was the part of the first twenty four to escape on the night of 24th March 1944, where he would pose as a Spanish labourer. He was recaptured near the Austrian border where he was interrogated under torture and eventually shot.
