Hallmarked Silver Presentation Cigarette Case of Lieutenant R G Snelgrove Skipper of HMY Conidaw, Who Rescued 165 Men from Calais, Whilst Under German Control in May 1940, fine quality engine turned hallmarked silver (Birmingham 1940) with unmarked (gold) Merchant Navy crown to the centre. Inside is engraved ‘Lieut R. G. Snelgrove From Conidaw & Dover Patrol 1939-1940’. Gilded interior, hallmarks to the top. Lieutenant Snelgrove was the skipper of HMY Conidaw who on 25th May 1940 entered Calais, then in control of the German forces and rescued 165 men, being the last ship to leave Calais. He returned the vessel to Dunkirk on 30th May and rescued a further 80 allied soldiers. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C) in August 1940 for his services. On the 8th August 1940, Snelgrove left Conidaw as he received a commission as a Lieutenant on HMS Eaglet.
