YVJ 431 K, a 1972 Austin 1800 with uncommon black coachwork, only 31,817 miles are registered on the speedometer, this is believed genuine, she is understood to have last been on the road in 1987 and has been standing in a garage in the intervening years. (Tax discs expiring from June 1973 to June 1978 and from June 1981 to June 1986 as well as a 6 month disc expiring 31/3/87 are included with the car). She will require re-commissioning including attention to fluid loss from the brake and clutch systems. The vehicle was trailered to the sale-rooms and a make-shift supply of fuel from a small can was connected via the fuel pump and eventually the engine started and, remarkably, ran on one cylinder, leading us to believe that there was minimal compression on the other three cylinders. Removal of the rocker-cover revealed the fact that three valves were stuck open and after easing these, a little more effort resulted in the engine running on all four cylinders; albeit a little noisily, as part of the exhaust system became detached during the initial moving of the car. There appears to be mainly surface rust evident, particularly to the roof gutters, to the sills and some structural rust damage to the wheel arches and to the front tops of the front wings, we have, however, not inspected the underside on a ramp. These vehicles are rarely seen nowadays and this one will undoubtedly prove rewarding to the purchaser providing both spacious and surprisingly economical transport and with the added bonus of potential free admission to vintage and classic rallies where it will certainly attract justifiable attention. This 46 year old "Time-Warp" vehicle should be eligible for both M.O.T. test and Road Tax exemption under the rolling 40 year system. The Austin is being sold to close an estate and we have so far been unable to locate the registration documentation, so a new document will have to be applied for.
