The 1915-1951 verse of the WWI Irish fighter pilot, Eric Betts DSO DFC - titled 'The Ribald Rhymes of Rufus Rudderbar', the anthology of 88 typewritten poems was arranged by the poet-pilot himself in a loose-leaf binder with the explanatory note: 'The original rhymes were lost in the Battle of Britain; this is an attempt to reconstruct them from various publications ... from copies given to friends and from memory'. The vast majority of verse was written in the three decades between 1915 and 1945. Air Vice Marshall Eric Bourne Coulter Betts CBE DSC DFC (1897-1971) was born in Bengal, as was his father, a highly successful jute merchant, and his grandfather, a Hooghly District Deputy Collector. He was educated at Monkstown Park, Dublin, and Sherborne School, where he was an exhibitioner. He joined the RNVR five days after his 18th birthday and was awarded the DSC 'in recognition of his services as a Royal Naval Air Service observer-lieutenant on February 1st 1917, when he carried out a long [long range photographic] reconnaissance and returned with extremely important information, shooting down an enemy scout machine which attacked him on his way back.' In September 1917 his only brother, Conrad Coryston Betts, followed him into the RNAS and was posted to the British Aegean Squadron where he too served as an observer, and also as a bomber. He was killed seven months later, having just turned 19, when on a mission to bomb the German battlecruiser SMS Goeben his plane had engine trouble and crashed into the sea. Promoted captain, he married in 1918 Mary Banks, the widow of WH Banks and daughter of John Grewar of Dundee. He was awarded the DFC in 1919 with the citation: 'An observer officer of great skill who has carried out over 20 long-distance photographic reconnaissances during the past four months, and in conjunction with his pilot, has brought home about 1,000 photographs of enemy positions of inestimable value, in addition to destroying eight enemy machines. He commanded 101 (B) Squadron (1934-35) and was promoted Wing Commander in 1936. Mary, his wife of 45 years, died in 1963 aged 76. He remarried Margaret May O'Dea in 1965 and died in Co. Cork in 1971.
