A Victorian keyless lever silver fob watch, engine turned case, the back with vacant cartouche within belt frame, the white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds dial, the movement inscribed WC Deacon, Barton Fabis and numbered 31058, Chester 1901; together with a continental silver case pocket watch, scrolling foliate engraved back, white enamel dial with Roman numerals; a third pocket watch, white metal case (3) (faults)

WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Royal Air Force Officer, inventor of the jet engine. A.L.S., Frank, two pages, 8vo, Wilde Lake Terrace, Columbia, 5th July 1989, to Dr B.C. West Jr. Whittle informs his correspondent 'I have had great difficulty keeping up with any mail for various reasons - house guests, periods of ill health etc... an attack of bronchitis… a series of dizzy spells… A mini stroke was diagnosed by doctors at Andrews AFB as a possible explanation but I doubt it… I think it inner ear trouble.' Continuing 'I think I have tried to phone you to save writing and had no reply, but can't be certain. My short term memory is rather poor these days - especially during the periods of 'daze'.' Further adding that he will not be able to accept the invitation to visit as, 'We are both becoming allergic to travelling and are already committed to more than we want… Sundry awards and all that.' Concluding 'Interested to hear that Peggy went to Jamaica. I wonder what it's like these days… I owned a house near Montego Bay (above the golf course at the Rose Hall estate). But I gave all that up about '69 and rather burnt my fingers financially.' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Whittle. EX
WORLD WAR II: A small selection of First Day Covers (1970-1999), signed, comprising Sir Frank Whittle (1907-1996, English Royal Air Force Officer, inventor of the jet engine), Airey Neave (1916-1979, first British officer successfully to escape from the German prisoner-of-war camp Oflag IV-C at Colditz Castle), W.E. 'Wally' Hammond and Don 'Tubby' Lister (escapees from Lamsdorf prison after being transferred from Colditz), Richard Todd (1919-2009, Irish-born British Soldier and Film Actor), all signed in pen ink to clear areas of the cover. Together with A.L.S., Wally Hammond, one page, 4to, Henley-on-Thames, 11th November 1972, to George. A brief letter describing the escape made by himself and Tubby Lister from Lamsdorf prison in 1942. Also including, First Day Cover entitled Midnight Run, depicting a Lancaster bomber from 617 Squadron releasing its bomb, signed by John Thaw (1942-2002, British Actor), to a clear area of the cover. Original 1838 FOLDER (14" x 20") with LITHOGRAPHED DRAWINGS (Part 1) by John C Bourne of the London & Birmingham Railway under construction with topographical and descriptive accounts by John Britton FSA. Contains the 8 original card lithographs - Euston Grove Station entrance, Engine-House, Hampstead Road bridge, Regent's Canal bridge, Boxmoor embankment, Watford Tunnel face, Wolverton Valley embankment, Avon Viaduct plus map of London Division. Some professional restoration to folder, lithographs generally in very good condition. [Folder + 9]
