März 1931 im hessischen Lollar geborene Heinz Mack besucht 1950-53 die Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf und macht sein Staatsexamen in Kunst- und Werkerziehung. Parallel dazu studiert er in Köln Philosophie. Zusammen mit Otto Piene gründet Mack 1957 die avantgardistische Künstlergruppe `ZERO`, mit der sein Name seither untrennbar verbunden ist. Anstelle von `Klassischen Kompositionen` stellt sie den Betrachter vor völlig neue und provozierende Aspekte: Licht, Bewegung, Raum, Zeit, Dynamik, Vibration und serielle Strukturen treten in den Vordergrund. Licht und Bewegung sind auch die zentralen Themen der nun entstehenden Kunstwerke, wie das `Sahara-Projekt`, das Mack 1958 konzipiert und 1968/69 teilweise realisiert. Für die Documenta III in Kassel schafft er 1964 zusammen mit Piene und Uecker den `Licht-Raum`, der sich heute im Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf befindet. 1966 findet eine Einzelausstellung seiner Arbeiten in der New Yorker Howard Wise Gallery statt. Im selben Jahr findet die letzte `ZERO`-Ausstellung in Bonn statt.Durch die Hereinnahme von Licht, sei es nun passiv oder aktiv, werden die Objekte von Mack aus ihrem rein skulpturalen Umfeld herausgehoben und bekommen eine eigenständige Komponente. Es ist nicht mehr nur die Materialität der Formen, die den Gesamteindruck bestimmt, das Licht bestimmt aktiv deren Aussagekraft. In der hier angebotenen Arbeit ist einmal mehr zu beobachten, wie sehr sich Heinz Mack in seiner Kunst mit dem Einfluss von Licht, Dreidimensionalität und den daraus resultierenden optischen Phänomenen beschäftigt.Neben den `Rotoren` bilden die `Lichtreliefs` eine weitere selbstständige Werkgruppe, die vor allem während der 1970er Jahre - nach Auflösung der `ZERO`-Bewegung - in Erscheinung tritt. In den 1980er Jahre erhält Mack zahlreiche Aufträge zur Gestaltung des öffentlichen Raums. So stellt er 1981 den `Jürgen-Ponto-Platz` in Frankfurt fertig, 1984 wird die `Columne pro caelo` vor dem Kölner Dom errichtet, 1989 konzipiert Mack den Platz der Deutschen Einheit in Düsseldorf. Inspiriert durch die Sonnenfarben seines Ateliers auf Ibiza widmet sich Mack ab 1991 wieder intensiv der Malerei, nennt seine Werke `Chromatische Konstellationen`. Einen Beweis für seine Vielfältigkeit liefert der Künstler 1999: Anlässlich des 250. Geburtstages von Goethe erscheint die Publikation `Mack: Ein Buch der Bilder zum West-östlichen Divan`. Für sein Gesamtwerk und für seine Arbeit als Botschafter der Kulturen erhält Mack das große Verdienstkreuz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Heinz Mack gilt als unermüdlicher Experimentator im Spektrum des Farblichts. Als Maler, Zeichner, Skulpturenkünstler, Keramiker, aber auch als Gestalter von Plätzen und Interieurs stellt er die ästhetischen Gesetze von Licht und Farbe, Struktur und Form in immer neue Dialoge. Seine Werke befinden sich in rund einhundert öffentlichen Sammlungen in aller Welt.
