A rare Victorian silver 'Castle Top' card case by Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham, date letter indistinct, possibly 1844, of rectangular form, the surface decorated with chased and embossed scrolling leaf and floral decoration to a matt background, the centre a high relief repoussé depiction of Robert Burns' monument in Alloway, Scotland, with Alloway Kirk and Burns' cottage in the background and the Brig O' Doon in the foreground, the heavily decorated reverse around a monogrammed cartouche, 2.4ozt 10 x 7cm (4 x 3in) Nathaniel Mills senior registered his mark in 1803 as one part of the partnership 'Mills and Langston'. In 1825 he left the partnership and concentrated on making silver items on his own, registering his now famous punch mark 'N.M' within a rectangle at the Birmingham Assay Office. Nathaniel Mills II was born in 1811 and worked for his father. Now famous for their high quality and well-constructed boxes, Mills contributed to the popularity of the so-called 'Castle-Top' silver visiting card cases engraved with British landmarks and sold as souvenirs to tourists and he became one of the most prolific Birmingham box makers at the time. They appealed to a public fascinated by novelty and became - and still are - highly collectible. Along with his brothers William and Thomas, he adopted new innovations and manufacturing techniques such as engine-turning, stamping and casting, and most of the items were made between 1840 and 1853. Nathaniel Mills died in 1873 a rich man, leaving £30,000 in his will and is buried in Warstone Lane Cemetery, in the heart of the Birmingham jewellery quarter. Calling cards were left behind by a visitor at the premises if the required person was not available. They served as both an introductory letter and a symbol of manners and social standing. The custom of leaving visiting cards lasted throughout the 19th century, however Castle Top silver was at the height of fashion between 1840 to 1860. This brief period of popularity makes these cases extremely collectible today. Most Castle Top silver is made by die stamping (pushing the metal out from behind using a stamp). The greater the decoration stands clear from the front of the cover, the harder it was to make, and these examples are highly sought after by collectors. Many scenes are quite common, such as Windsor castle, however the rarer the scene the more valuable the item. The record for a Castle Top card case stands at £9,800 which was for a very rare example of The Post Office, Dublin. The subject on this example is rare, and together with the unusually high relief makes this a particularly desirable piece.

Thomas Edward Lawrence, "Lawrence of Arabia" or T. E. Shaw (1888-1935). Two autograph letters addressed to Albert Yarwood at his shipbuilding company in Northwich, Cheshire. In the letters, Lawrence refers to progress on H.M.S. Auxiliary "Aquarius" ('I've had letters from Singapore about the Aquarius, which seems to have been adopted as a Station Pet! If she does half what they ask of her, she will be a wonder ship. The only criticism so far is that she is a bit hot, in the engine room. So I suppose the poor old chief is still sweating! He'll qualify for a jockey in two or three years time.'); he discusses a new design of flooring for his cottage, 'Clouds Hill', in Dorset (NB: Lawrence is fatally injured in a motorcyle accident near to this cottage in May 1935); he refers to Pat Knowles ('Pat is my next-door neighbour and he and I have gone into partnership (Knowles & Shaw, very LTD) to build our respective shacks'); he is grateful for Albert Yarwood's hard work in supplying 'composition details' and refers to the Air Ministry ('I never dreamed I was going to put you to all this trouble. Two long letters and a box of samples. I am so sorry, and so grateful! You have been run off your legs for the Sierra Leone ship: we are in that state over our own target boats...In the far background, almost forgotten, stands the Air Ministry wringing its hands and swearing. No matter. When we have finished the job we will have time to remember our owners.'); he requests an appropriate bill ('you must please charge us properly for what you send. Fellows should pay for their fun, and I'm having a lot of fun out of my cottage.'). Each letter is entirely handwritten in bold black ink - headed 13 Birmingham Street, Southampton - and is complete with its original envelope. Each letter is signed, 'T E Shaw'. One letter is dated 7 June 1934 (envelope addressed to Albert Yarwood Esq, Fernacre, Greenbank, Northwich, Cheshire - postmarked 9 June 1934); the other is dated 6 August 1934 (envelope addressed to Albert Yarwood Esq, The Dock, Northwich, Cheshire - postmarked 6 August 1934). The letters date from the period in which Lawrence was part of a small team developing high-speed boats for the RAF. Very good condition, clean and bright; small rust mark on one envelope (2)

Paintings ranged fromsemi-abstract oils, small watercolour studies, reinforced with line, to larger watercolour/gouachecompositions, murals and stained-glass design.Born in Aspull, he lived in Billinge near Winstanley College (previously Up Holland GrammarSchool) where he was Head of Art for 26 years. He was the first Artist in Residence at DrumcroonEducation Art Centre. A travelling scholarship to study mural painting in Europe followed inaddition to work on the Diaghilev Exhibition for Edinburgh Festival and the Sunday Observer inLondon.Early work (1960-1975) featured semi-abstract oils, linear patterns adapted from plans of largebuildings and some religious motifs. The latter part of the 1970?s featured subjects which wereeasier to recognise including mythological creatures and birds depicted in a decorative two-dimensional manner with lots of detail in linear backgrounds. Later works featured parts ofbuildings, with special attention given to detail, and the relationship between façade andbackground. The traditional approach to perspective was avoided and subjects were oftenrepeated with variations of colour and arrangement. He held over two dozen exhibitions at galleries in the North West, Midlands, Cambridge, London,Salisbury & Norwich Cathedrals. All had a particular theme ? National Trust properties, churches, cathedrals, waterside buildings, Oxbridge colleges, Thomas Hardy etc.Large scale works include the 37-foot Charter Mural in the History Shop, Wigan and a floor toceiling panel at Holgate School, Orrell.
