An interesting collection of WW2 Wellington Bomber ephemera relating to Sergeant R.J. Crawley, R.A.F. Comprising Observers and Air Gunners Flying Log book `1385634 Crawley. R.J. Wireless Operator`, first entry 4.1.1943, last entry 26.12.1943. On the night of the 20th December 1943 whilst on a bombing raid No 7 Squadron were "shot up attacked by JU88, 25miles south of Aachon, wireless, hydraulics etc rendered useless, post inner engine caught fire, B/A was unable to jettison bombs, second attack by FW190 after turning back, rear gunner deserted trusset through lack of oxygen. The skipper and I were injured by splinters - violent evasive action got us away from enemy fighter with tailplane badly damaged and cannon shells through fuselage and engineers panel. Covered by searchlights over Rotterdam but hit on bomb. Once again we escaped, lost height rapidly over the North Sea stood by for ditching. Reached coast over Norfolk and baled out. I jumped with parachute already open, rear gunner was killed. Skipper and I were taken to hospital, he got a well deserved D.F.M.` Together with a large quantity of original photographs, a Caterpillar club membership card, letters etc
