A 1928 James Model 12 500cc V-Twin, registration number PH 8832, frame number DP2099, engine number ST2307, mustard/black. James were very proud that they manufactured all of the major components for their machines, unlike many of its contemporaries which bought in the majority. The firm?s first V-Twin, the 3½ hp 500cc No. 7 became available in 1914, priced at 60 guineas. After WWI James continued to offer a quality range of both single and V-Twin machines with the Model 12 Sports Twin becoming available in 1923. They found great success in the popular reliability trials of the day, with all machines individually tested by the works before being despatched to the new owner. Our vendor acquired this rare saddle tank Model 12 in 1993 in a very sorry state then embarked on a full restoration to show standard which was completed in 2018. The extensive restoration covered all aspects including the fabrication of a new fuel tank and stainless steel exhaust downpipes, rebuilt engine with a re-bore and new pistons, new pilgrim pump, reconditioned magneto, rebuilt wheels, new tyres, resprayed tank and frame, amongst other numerous items to create a motorcycle to be proud of. The accompanying history file contains numerous receipts, technical drawings, images of the James before restoration, previous MOTs, owner's handbook and general correspondence. This beautifully restored James is one of a small handful of survivors and would grace any collection. A 1983 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica (MHR), registration number A159 RWW, engine number DM900R 984169, engine number 096509, red, white and green. Mike Hailwood made a triumphant return to the Isle of Man in 1978 winning the TT F1 race after an eleven year break and 38 year old Hailwood beat Phil Read?s lap record in the process. Ducati released a replica of the privateer 900SS in 1978 in honour of Mike?s victory. This late Mk1 kick-start MHR has only covered a low 9500 kilometres from new (approx. 6000 miles) and still sports its original exhaust amongst its other factory fitments. This 900 was imported in the UK at the end of 2013/beginning of 2014 and road registered in 2016. It has been stored in a climate controlled environment and our vendor also advises us that a new battery will be fitted before the auction. Having seen little action over the last two years it would be advisable that some light recommissioning should be undertaken before the Ducati takes to the road. Deighton and Sons, 1816.⁂ Ada Lovelace's copy of Babbage's first important publication, exposing English students to 'continental mathematics'. "... Charles Babbage, George Peacock and John Herschel... translated Lacroix Treatise on Calculus and touted the superiority of Leibnitz's differential notation over Newton's (then widely regarded in England as sacrosanct)." - Dictionary of Scientific Biography. With a pencil inscription at end of the Advertisement leaf: "How vain are the affectations of Man! Four years later this book was printed." Also, seemingly random pencil note at tail of page 635, perhaps a draft of a note or letter: "You must not trouble yourself - I shall not read the one or the other - and I'll be - A?--."Ada Byron, the only legitimate daughter of Lord Byron was solely brought up by her mother, Anne, after her parents separated. Determined that her daughter should not become a poet, she was trained as a mathematician and scientist, eventually leading to a close friendship with Charles Babbage. "In 1843 she translated a paper by General L. F. Menabrea, later to be prime minister of Italy, describing Babbage's main attempt to implement this notion, the projected analytical engine (which was to supersede the aborted difference engine but which was never built). She added extensive notes to Menabrea's paper which contain not only what is regarded as one of the earliest computer programs but also prescient comments about the future of such an engine, which have stood the test of time." (Oxford DNB). She married, in 1835, William King, eighth Baron King of Ockham, Earl of Lovelace, and they had two sons and a daughter. In she went to live in East Horsley Tower which the above books were bound.
