Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Sylvan Dell Riverboat" New York City. Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Sylvan Dell Riverboat stamp issued August 22, 1996. In 1787, John Fitch built the first experimental steamboat in America, but it wasn't until the early 1800s that the first commercial steamboat was designed. Robert Fulton, an American inventor, engineer and artist, changed America's waterway transportation system with the debut of the 150-foot-long vessel he called simply "Steamboat." The boat was powered by two 15-foot-diameter side-wheel paddles, driven by a single-cylinder condensing steam engine. In August 1807, the vessel took its first trial voyage, a 150-mile run between New York City and Albany. Traveling at an average of 4.7 mph, Fulton made the trip in 32 hours, a vast improvement over the typical cargo carrying sailing sloop's four day trip. After making a few improvements, Fulton began steaming commercially in September 1807. Every fortnight, he would complete three round trips on the Hudson River, carrying passengers and light freight. In the winter of his steamboat's first year, Fulton improved his vessel, fitting guards over the paddle wheels, beautifying the passenger quarters and enlarging the hull. These modifications significantly improved the boat, and in 1808 Fulton registered it as "North River Steamboat of Clermont." The press referred to the vessel as the "Clermont." Fulton's successful enterprise led to a 150-year booming steamboat industry. The painting features the Sylvan Dell on the East River in New York. It was one of five ships owned and operated by the Harlem & N.Y. Navigation Company. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 16.75 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B15437)
Harry Schaare (New York, Arizona, 1922 - 2008) "Octave Chanute Testing His Glider" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 21c Chanute and Bi-plane Glider Air Mail stamp issued March 29, 1979. Not even man's long list of haunting mishaps in the air discouraged Octave Chanute from investigating the possibility of flight. He was certain that careful, scientific scrutiny of past experiments would open the skies to man. Repeatedly, Chanute urged his colleagues that flight hinged on the perfection of a machine capable of propelling and sustaining itself. He felt certain that these qualities could be achieved through the use of wings and an air screw driven by a gasoline engine. In 1891, he published an article entitled "Progress in Flying Machines" that exerted a profound influence on the aeronautical world. In this article, he described past aeronautical failures and attempted to explain why these flying machines had failed. Chanute's belief that man should continually build on his predecessors' knowledge contributed to productive aeronautical research. Seeking to further advance the study of flight, Chanute established a glider camp on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. There, he and his associates conducted some 2,000 glider experiments. Incredibly, all of these were executed without accident. In the spring of 1900, Octave Chanute received a letter from Wilbur Wright requesting information on an aeronautical problem. This letter marked the beginning of a long friendship. And, on December 17, 1903, Chanute's dream of flight came true when the Wright Brothers achieved man's first powered flight. John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Princess Coronation Class Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Panel for St. Lucia Locomotives Stamps issued October 13, 1983. LMS 4-6-2 Princess Coronation Class The Duchess of Buccleuch was built in 1938. Although the "Princess Royal" class was a vast leap forward in LMS motive power, improved services by the LNER to Scotland and the fashion for streamlined locomotive design in the mid-1930's meant that the LMS needed something to top the "Princess Royal" class. Stanier threw away a lot of his earlier design policies inherited from the GWR and came up with what is considered to be his finest creation, the "Princess Coronation" class (sometimes referred as the "Duchess" class); this despite the fact that he personally felt (and probably with some justification considering later events) that streamlining was a waste of time, at least with the facilities that the LMS had at the time. The LMS wanted a engine capable of hauling long-range expresses in excess of 100mph; on the 29th June 1937, the first engine of the class 6220 "Coronation" exceeded these expectations, reaching a speed of at least 113mph on the inaugural run of the "Coronation Scot", the LMS's new London-Glasgow express Unfortunately, the "Coronation Scot" was a short-lived serviced. It never really lived up to the LMS's expectations, and the onset of World War Two finished the service off. By 1944, 29 locomotives were in service, with 5 being built without streamlined casings. Another 9 would eventually be built, and of the class, 3 would eventually be preserved. Image Size: 12.25 x 2.75 in. Overall Size: 18.75 x 19 in. Unframed. (B08645)
J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Hawaii Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Hawaii Commemorative Cover postmarked December 28, 1994. Intrigued by the vast areas of undeveloped land surrounding the then-deserted Hawaiian lagoon of Pearl Harbor, merchant Benjamin Franklin Dillingham dreamed of irrigating the region and building a railroad there. Although many thought that the idea of a railway was ludicrous, and that the promoter was a candidate for the hale pupule (crazy house), in September 1888, Hawaii's King Kalakaua officially granted Dillingham permission to begin construction on the Oahu Railway. Delighted, Dillingham promised his friends a free ride on his railroad exactly one year later. However, as the planned inaugural date drew near, he was without a locomotive. Determined to fulfill his pledge, Dillingham purchased a small Baldwin saddle-tank engine to temporarily pull a few flat cars. On the first anniversary of the beginning of its construction, the train was crowded with locals, as well as bankers, plantation owners and other haole (non-Hawaiian) businessmen. All went well on the train's maiden trip until the engineer pulled the throttle open. Unfortunately he had neglected to remove anti-rust compound from some tubes, and debris spewed from the stack, sullying the faces and pristine clothing of the passengers. Despite this mishap, on November 16, 1889, the Oahu Railway, outfitted with two Baldwin 4-4-0 engines and a fleet of wooden passenger cars, had its official inauguration. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14914)
Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Ilyshin II-2" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Ilyshin II-2 from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. Sergei V. Ilyushin began work on what be called his "Flying Tank" in 1937, integrating an armored steel, nickel and molybdendum shell into an airframe that protected the crew, engine and fuel system. Stalin approved the design in early 1938, and construction began in February 1939, with the first flight in December of that year. While early Il-2s were single seaters, later models had two seats. They were few in number and relatively vulnerable to attack from the rear. But as their great utility was realized, more and more were built, with the total manufactured exceeding 36,000, more than any other World War II aircraft with the possible exception of the Polikarpov Po 2. The Il-2 became an increasingly important element of the Red Air Force, and its pilots extremely proficient in close air support. Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. Robert Seabeck (Wyoming, B. 1945) "1957 Bel Air" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60c 1957 Bel Air stamp issued September 1, 1998. The 1950s were a time of rock 'n' roll music, drive-in movies, and fries and a malt with the gang at the local burger palace. The automobile that most symbolizes this carefree era for many people is the 1957 Bel Air Sports Coupe. With its prominent fins, deeply-hooded headlights, twin windsplits on the hood and wide-mouthed grille, the '57 Bel Air Sports Coupe was an automobile fancier's dream come true. A brilliant gold "V" on the front of this sleek vehicle proclaimed to the world that its owner had a powerful V-8 engine under the hood. The Super Turbo-Fire 283-cubic-inch V-8 produced an incredible one horsepower per cubic inch. A popular Chevy ad bragged, "Curves don't come too sharp or hills too steep for this nimble new Chevy. The road isn't made that can make it breathe hard." Image Size: 7.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B15992)
Robert Seabeck (Wyoming, B. 1945) "1931 Sport Roadster" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60c 1931 Sport Roadster stamp issued September 1, 1998. Despite the Great Depression, motor cars flourished during the 1930s. Although jobs were few and far between, for those with even a moderate income a mere $475 could purchase the 1931 Chevrolet Sport Roadster -- the lowest price in the company's history! This incredible automobile's six-cylinder engine generated 50 horsepower. With the rumble seat open, the Sport Roadster seated four. Additional features included an attractive three-spoke steering wheel made of hard rubber, hood louvers, wire wheels, four-wheel mechanical brakes, vibration damper and a more durable clutch. DeLuxe models were furnished with a stylish chrome-plated wire mesh radiator guard. Sales were steady, with Chevy pulling ahead of Ford for the first time in history. Image Size: 7.75 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B15989)
Dan Fern (British, B. 1945) "Board Games" Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Great Britain 19p Toys and Games stamp issued May 16, 1989. Zipping round and round with dazzling speed, new toy trains and racing cars are always a source of excitement -- and by time honored tradition sometimes more so to the father than his son. Still, when dad steps in and takes over, he can claim a certain amount of historical precedent. Originally, a "toy" was a pretty trifle made for adults, not children. Only in the 19th century did the word "toy" come to specifically mean a child's plaything -- and that was a long time after the first toy train had brought enjoyment. In fact, the earliest toy trains actually preceded the invention of the "Iron Horse" itself, with a line of wheeled playthings pulled along by hand. After the steam engine was invented, mechanical power gradually entered the toy box, too. Water-filled boilers were heated by methylated spirit burners, and the old toy pull trains were soon transformed into shiny lines of railroad cars hauled on miniature rails by chugging toy steam locomotives. Toy electric locomotives ensued in due course. Then, after the automobile was invented, toy "Tin Lizzies" also soon were delighting children of all ages. And it wasn't just the children's cars and racing car sets that became popular -- though America's fascination with the automobile is amply reflected in its toy boxes. Finely crafted precision miniature automobiles, some with intricate moving parts and costing hundreds of dollars, have become favorites with adult collectors. Image Size: 17.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 21 x 22.75 in. Unframed. (B12017)
