Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Henry Ford's Model T" Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. Born on a farm in the midst of the Civil War, Henry Ford did not find his true profession until he began working with the internal combustion machine, chiefly "to lift farm drudgery off flesh and blood and lay it on steel and motors." He quickly discovered, however, that "people were more interested in something that would travel on roads, than in something that would do work on the farm." His first motor car was a two-seater buggy powered by a four horsepower gasoline engine, and was on the road in the Depression year of 1893. Depression or not, it caught the public fancy; soon thousands, then tens of thousands, were on the dirt roads, and soon the popularity of the new motor car led to a nationwide demand for paved highways. In the meantime, Ford tried his skills at building racing cars: these proved effective, but not profitable, and he returned to making a car so cheap that everyone could afford to own one. In 1908, he devised his most ingenious idea ... the ever-famous Model T which, by devising an assembly line technique, he was able to sell for less than four hundred dollars! The Model T was, or seemed, almost indestructible. The most typical American of all cars, the Model T was the first mass-produced assembly line car: the first car that everyone could afford. In its appearance and its character, it represented the symbol of American equality. Image Size: 20 x 21.25 in. Overall Size: 25.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B06525)
J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Alabama Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Alabama Commemorative Cover postmarked September 6, 1994. "The Lord put the mountains between Birmingham and the sea, and the man who tries to bring them together undertakes heroic work." On September 6, 1908, such a railroad line was completed, and soon thereafter, Harry M. Atkinson, president of the Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic Railroad (AB&A), spoke these dramatic words at the dedication of his new railway. Piercing the mountains of eastern Alabama, the AB&A's workers created a link that eventually connected Birmingham and the Midwest to Georgia and Florida. The route was one of the last main rail lines constructed in the United States, thus it is comparatively well engineered. Despite the mountainous stretch in the middle of the route, all curves were held to a maximum of just six degrees. This translated into a mere restriction of 40 miles per hour for freight trains negotiating bends, even those chiseled into the jagged walls of the Appalachian Mountains. Traffic on this route increased in 1926 when the system was reorganized and taken over by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In 1967, that line merged with another railway to become the Seaboard Coast Line. Today, the original AB&A is part of CSX Transportation. Presently it is heavily used by CSX's diesel-powered freight trains, continuing to be a vital link between the Midwest and the South. The "Bee Line," as it was once touted, is handsomely commemorated by this artwork, which depicts the 4-6-0 type engine, No. 1501, at Birmingham Station's arched train shed. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14856)
J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Michigan Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Michigan Commemorative Cover postmarked August 12, 1995. During the early 1870s, logging was the dominant industry in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The conveyance of timber harvested from those northern woods was largely accomplished by horses. However, inventor and lumberman Ephraim Shay, compelled by the high cost of such transportation, set out to develop a tramway to reduce his expenses. After spending six winters refining what his friends referred to as "Shay's Folly," the diligent inventor was ultimately rewarded. His finished creation was a geared-logging locomotive quite unlike the traditional siderod-driven steam engines of the day. Shay's invention operated with gears and universal joints, allowing the engine to climb steeper grades and sharper curves on tracks that had been hastily laid for lumber removal. In 1888, Shay moved to Harbor Springs, Michigan, where he established a logging railroad called the Harbor Springs Railway Company. Locally known as the Hemlock Central, this system served both as a testing ground for Shay's later locomotives and as a means of removing the remaining timber in the Harbor Springs area. Shay ultimately produced three locomotives for this line, including the one shown here, No. 1, nicknamed "Baby." However, his greatest contribution to the railroad industry came through his association with the Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio. From 1880 to 1945, the firm built more than 2,700 geared locomotives under license from Shay. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15146)
Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "1915 Fokker E 1" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Fokker E 1 from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. Considered by many to be the first true fighter plane, the Fokker I gained immediate fame over the Western Front in World War I because it was not only fairly agile, it also carried a single machine gun which was synchronized to fire forward directly through the propeller. Called the "Eindecker," meaning "one wing," the E I was powered by a seven cylinder Oberursel rotary engine of 80 horsepower and was equipped with a 7.92-mm LMG 08/15 machine gun, of the type often referred to as a "Spandau." Top speed was just over 80 mph, but this was more than enough when the aircraft made its combat debut in the summer of 1915. It was succeeded in a few months by the Fokker E II, which was slightly improved, and then in late 1915 by the E III, which had a 100 horsepower Oberursel rotary. Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B17094)
Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "1941 Junkers Ju 88" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Junkers Ju 88 from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. The Junkers Ju 88 was probably the most versatile bomber of World War II; it was certainly the most highly modified and widely used German bomber. Oddly enough, the Ju 88 was designed by an American, Alfred Gassner, and a German colleague of his, W. H. Evers. The twin-engine aircraft first flew on December 21, 1936, and entered regular service in September 1939. Powered by either Junker Jumo or BMW engines, this highly maneuverable, well-built aircraft filled many roles, including night-fighter, close air support, reconnaissance, tank-killer, torpedo bomber, trainer and unguided missile. Serving on every front in World War II, the Ju 88 was still being produced when German factories were overrun in 1945. Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B17156)
Michael Garland (American, B. 1952) "Charles Kaman" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Charles H. Kaman Commemorative Cover postmarked April 17, 1999. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Charles Kaman graduated magna cum laude with an Aeronautical Engineering degree from Catholic University in 1940. While employed at the Hamilton Standard division of United Aircraft, he rose to become chief of aerodynamics for the firm's helicopter industry. Kaman perfected a model of the helicopter rotor system and founded his own business in December 1945. In 1949, the company's first production helicopter, the K-225, was introduced. Two years later, a K-225 fitted with a gas turbine engine became the world's first turbine-powered helicopter. During the 1950s and 1960s, Kaman Corporation was a significant producer of military helicopters. Especially notable was the company's H-43 Husky -- the only military helicopter to go through its entire service history with no loss of life or accidents attributed to the aircraft's design. Other achievements by Kaman's firm include the first all-composite rotor blade and the first remote-controlled helicopter. During the 1990s, Kaman developed the K-MAX, the world's first helicopter designed specifically for medium and heavy lift operation. In recognition of his achievements, Kaman was awarded the highest honors given by the Department of Defense, the Navy League and the British Royal Aeronautical Society. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 17.25 in. Unframed. (B16464)

The final production Ace of Spades, unfinished and offered directly by former Lea-Francis owner Barrie Price. In 1962, Lea-Francis Cars Ltd. was bought by Midlands engineer and entrepreneur Barrie PriceHe became known as 'Mr Lea-Francis', only selling the company as recently as 2019Barrie and his friend, the late Peter Engelbach, decided to produce a new car and, in 1980, launched the distinctive '3-litre Sports' using a ladder-type box-section chassis frame, with a hand-crafted aluminium bodyAt the 1992 Motor Show, a longer version was shown, which revived the name Ace of Spades. A total of 5 of these cars have been built to order, in either short or long-chassis configuration. They were powered by a 3.4-litre Jaguar XJ6 engine and the interiors featured leather seats, wood veneers and polished aluminium accentsThis car, Chassis #5506, would have been the sixth car but its build was suspended in 1990 and never recommencedThe engine is a second-hand, 4.2-litre Jaguar unit that we understand has covered some 40,000 milesThe car requires an amount of work (wiring, interior, soft top, lights etc.). Chassis #5504 is a fully completed Ace of Spades (sold at auction in 2018) and may be available for reference, measurements etc.Mr Price has included a letter of provenance which states his intention to sell the car due to his recent 90th birthday. Chassis #5506, is believed to be the final Lea-Francis production car and displays a brass plaque confirming chassis and engine numbersThis will be a very rare motor car when finished and possibly quite valuable. Interested parties are invited to watch David Harper's video (below) and are welcome to view the project to establish just how much work might be involved.
