Terence Cuneo CVO OBE RGI (1907- 1996) Express Engines at Tyseley - No.45593 LMS Jubilee Kholapur No.45593 with GWR Loco No.7029 Clun Castle at Tyseley signed lower right Cuneo June 1968 oil on canvas 75 x 100cm Provenance: Private collection Woburn Bedfordshire LMS Jubilee Kholapur is still in operation in England today on a private line. The engine was bought by the late Patrick Whitehouse and restored at the Tyseley Railway Museum in Birmingham. The Kholaphur was one of the few engines which was strong enough to pull a passenger train up the infamous Lickey Incline without needing assistance from another engine. The Lickey Incline in England is a steep climb on the British railway network just south of Birmingham. At two miles at 1 in 37.7 it is the steepest sustained main-line railway incline in Great Britain Cuneos famous mouse is in evidence on the railway track in front of the engines. Terence Cuneo only started adding his trademark mouse after he was appointed official artist for the Queens Coronation in 1953. It was during a sitting for the Coronation that his cat brought in a mouse. From then on Terence Cuneo started adding the mouse character to his paintings. Terence Cuneo wrote whilst painting the present painting: Two old steam Flyers that have been preserved and spared the guillotine of progress
