Railway Interest - A large engraved glass goblet, the bowl decorated with an early steam locomotive engine, inscribed verso 'Success to Mr Timothy Hackworth and the Sans Pariel', on bladed knop stem and stepped circular foot, 21.5cm approx. ** Timothy Hackworth was the locomotive superintendent at the Stockton to Darlington railway, The Sans Pariel took part in the 1829 Rainhill Trials on the Liverpool to Manchester railway, it is likely that this goblet commemorates this event. At the trial the Sans Pariel was excluded from the prize because it was over the permitted maximum weight and suffered a cracked cylinder, supporters of Hackwood cried 'foul' as the cylinder had been cast by Robert Stephenson's firm. Stephenson's 'Rocket' was the winner of the trial, the Sans Pariel now resides at the Shildon Locomotive Museum.
