A silver engine turned and enamelled cigarette box, the hinged lid with a polychrome enamel panel depicting a recumbent wire-haired fox terrier, import marks for London 1928, and stamped '925', 11.5 x 8.5cm (4.5 x 3.25 in) Originally a working dog bred to bolt the fox from its earth. They were the favoured dog of the 1930's because of their agility, alertness and clean-cut appearance.

The breed originated in America by people from the Boston area who were interested in fighting dogs. A compact little dog usually weighing about 8kg (18lb), it is the markings that are considered to be particularly important.
