A 1964 Velocette LE Mk III 200 c.c. motorcycle, registration 105 MOU, first registered 7 Oct. 1964, recorded mileage 35444 (not warranted), three former keepers, complete with green log book, for restoration. The Velocette LE (for ‘little engine’) was launched, in 150 c.c. form, at the Earls Court Show in 1948 and represented an innovative and radical design, with a drive shaft, radiator and coil ignition. Marketed as the ‘Motorcycle for Everyman’ it was, however, expensive in comparison with rivals like the B.S.A. Bantam, and sales figures were disappointing. A more powerful 192 c.c. Mk II followed in 1951 which was purchased for patrol work by over fifty British Police forces. The Mk III was unveiled in 1958 and featured an extra, fourth gear. In spite of the machine’s developed reputation for reliability and practicality production ended in 1970 when the company went into voluntary liquidation. According to the accompanying green log book this motorcycle’s first registered keeper was the Hampshire Police Authority. This lot can be viewed at our Baynton Road saleroom, Ashton, Bristol, BS3 2EB, during the stated view times.
