Late 19th century French novelty timepiece in the form of a beam engine, movement by Guilmet of Paris. Realistically modelled on the machine with a centrally pivoted beam and two brass-bound flanking chambers on a stepped industrial base, the circular movement stamped with the GLT makers stamp and numbered 211 19cms by 20cm .FOOTNOTESA similar example is illustrated in Roberts, 'Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy Clocks, Shiffer, 1999, fig 22-25.The 8-day timepiece movement has a compound pendulum causing the beam to rock up and down and apparently operate the pistons.Guilmet produced a series of clocks of an industrial nature between c.1875 and the 1910s. The beam engine automaton is one, others include the steam hammer clock, lighthouse clocks, and mortar clocks. This lot numbered 211 must have been among the earliest of this series, as known serial numbers of the main series of industrial clocks listed in Derek Roberts' book, Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy Clocks run from 52 to 4566.. Have not had this clock running and cannot guarantee that it keeps good time. Mechanism appears complete. Dials with cracks. Case with general wear and scratched. Please see images.
