A button off the famous firefighter James Braidwoods uniform Comprising a white metal domed topped button, James Braidwood was born in 1800 and founded the worlds first Municipal fire service in Edinburgh in 1824, he was the first director of the London fire engine establishment, he tragically died at the Tooley Street fire on the 22nd June 1861 where a wall crushed him to death, the funeral procession was a mile and ahalf long, as a mark of respect every church in the city rang its bells. The buttons and epaulette's from his uniform were removed and distributed to the fire fighters of LFEE. Also a framed print of James Braidwood, by C H Jeens dated 1866, verso with history of the picture and how it came down to the family. Provenance: James Braidwood was the maternal grandfather of the vendors late grandmother by descent.
