GEORGE FREDERICK GREGORYS.S City of Melbourne 1876 Watercolour Signed lower right 54 x 89cm City of Melbourne II, 837 gross tons, 615 net. Iron passenger steamship built by J & G Thomson, Glasgow for the ASN Co. Well appointed vessel with all the trappings of the ‘modern’ era of the time. She worked the coastal run from Melbourne to North Queensland, and early 1870’s made a few journeys to San Francisco and Honolulu. 1873 saw her out of service with engine defects, her engines were compounded and returned to active service allegedly faster than before. Short–lived, she incurred further engine problems and was mostly out of service until 1888, when she had already been relegated to cargo only capacity. Broken up in Kerosine Bay, Sydney 1898. The 1876 Melbourne Cup takes a place in history for another tragic reason; the SS City Of Melbourne sailing from Sydney to Melbourne on Saturday 9 September with 13 strong contender racehorses ran into a savage storm the following day. A total of 11 horses were killed, including Nemesis (the winner of the 1876 AJC Metropolitan Handicap in Randwick, Sydney and favourite for the Cup, owned by John Moffat) and Robin Hood (another favourite, owned by Etienne de Mestre).

She spent most of her time trading between Melbourne and Tasmanian ports, being only occasionally seen in South Australia. An auxiliary engine was installed several years after she was built. The ketch was sold to the American Army in 1942 and operated out of New Caledonia. Following the war she remained in that region, and sank at her moorings in Maryborough, Queensland in 1954.
COLONIAL SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY Orizaba Oil on canvas Signed indistinctly lower right 52 x 120cm The Orizaba was built by the Barrow Ship Building Company in 1886 for the Orient Steam Navigational Co. and was used for the Royal Mail service. Designed for the fast trade, the vessel was considered to be a great improvement on existing designs. It had three decks, was fitted with a triple–expansion engine of 7 000 hp and was capable of a speed of 14 knots. The vessel could carry 126 first–class, 154 second–class and 400 steerage–class passengers. It was one of a number of vessels that established the tradition of Orient Line ships on the Australia run and had names that began with ‘O’. On 17 February 1905 she was wrecked on Five Fathom Bank between Point Peron and Garden Island, Western Australia.
