Pons, a French Victorian gorge carriage clock: the eight-day duration movement with a replaced platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a gong, with a push button repeat, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Pons and numbered 247, with an engine-turned mask to the top oval glass, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, Arabic five-minute outer numerals and blued steel spade hands, contained in a gorge case with a five-ribbed handle, height 17cm, including handle. *Biography In 1806 the clockmaker Pons was asked by the Minister of the Interior of France to go to the clockmaking town of Saint Nicolas d'Aliermont and revive the industry there, which he did by introducing machinery to manufacture movements rather than being made by hand. He won various exposition medals including silver in 1819 and 1823 and gold in 1834. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in recognition of his services to horology and sometime in the mid 1840's retired with his business being taken on by the clockmakers Borome Delépine and Cauchy, who continued the use of the Pons name and who would have been the makers of this particular clock.
