Section of the German Ju-88 Bomber which Crashed on the Isle of Wight on 29th May 1941, the crumpled metal section taken from the fuselage retains much of the original paint finish. The reverse has the support struts still in place. Accompanying the section is a typed statement from the current vendor giving the history of the item, which was given to him by a former member of the Isle of Wight Rifles, Wilf Kelleway, who was stationed on the island as part of a coastal artillery brigade, “One night in May 1941 Wilf happened to be driving an Army truck on the road from Freshwater, on his way towards Newport, and was approaching the road junction at Chessell when an aircraft crashed onto Wellow Down, just to the south of the road. He immediately made his way to the site and was the first to arrive. As soon as he got there it was clear there could be no survivors. Wilf took this piece of the fuselage and a control column as souvenirs; not wanting to get into trouble for taking them, nor get involved with any other authorities that would certainly shortly arrive, he then made a quick exit. As he drove away he remembered passing other vehicles that were headed to the scene.” Wilf left the items with his parents for safe keeping and was soon posted away from the Island, on his return “he was a little irritated to find that in the meantime his mother had given away the aircraft’s control column to a local lad, but he still had the section of fuselage”. The section roughly measures 52cms x 29cms. 19 German aircraft are noted as coming down on the Isle of Wight during WW2. The aircraft that crashed on Wellow Down (noted variously as neighbouring Chessell and Afton Downs in various reference books) is identified as a Junkers Ju88 A-5 of Staffel 3, Kunstenfliegergruppe 606, code number 7T+JH (works number 8240). The aircraft was based at Lannion, France. On 29th May 1941 it was returning from a bombing raid on the Liverpool area when it was intercepted and attacked by a Beaufighter. Badly damaged the Ju88 descended to low level over the Isle of Wight, apparently flying on one engine and obviously in difficulty, it crashed into an old chalk pit, killing all four crew members.
