Fine small and unusual French repeater carriage clock with alarm, the movement backplate signed L. Leroy & Cie, Paris, 19916 and 19622, striking on two gongs, the base fitted with a sonnerie and silence lever and also stamped 19916, the silvered dial signed L.Leroy & Cie, Horlogers de La Marine, 7 Bould de la Madeleaine, Paris over a subsidiary alarm dial and within an engine turned mask, within a gilt brass rounded arched case surmounted by a carrying handle, 4.5" high; also with outer Morocco leather travelling case and original key (scratch on dial plate between four and five o'clock)
Good French ormolu carriage clock striking on a gong, the silvered engine turned dial signed Garnier Paris and stamped no. 317 on the base behind the movement, with sound holes under the base, sliding top glazed panel and back door, within a plain case with cluster column pillars, 7.5" high; also with an outer Morocco leather travelling case and keys (Later replacement escapement)
Early steam engine.- Worcester (Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquis) A Century of the Names and Scantlings of such Inventions, as at present I can call to mind to have tried and perfected, first edition, with the rare 34-page supplement, lacking blanks Al, D12 and E6, some light foxing, a few ff. closely trimmed to borders, later calf, possibly a rembotage, rebacked, retaining much of original backstrip, [Bibliotheca Mechanica p.360; Norman 1976; Tomash & Williams S162; Wing W3532 & W3532A], 12mo, by J. Grismond, 1663.⁂ The Horblit copy of this charming catalogue of 100 inventions that the author claims to have originated. These include "How to make a man fly; which I have tried with a little Boy of ten years old in a Barn", "An artificial Horse" and "A portable Fortification able to contain five hundred fighting men". The supplement goes into greater detail about the "Water-commanding Engine" which appears to be a prototype of a very early steam engine.Provenance: Harrison D. Horblit (1912-1988, book label to pastedown).
An unusual pair of ormolu corner sconces, incorporating early 19th century elements, probably previously lustre wall lights, each strap work and engine milled body issuing three and four trumpet form sockets respectively, with Neoclassical mounts, later mounted to cream painted board, 113cm high, 54cm wide Provenance: Property from a Private Collection Condition Report: Assembled from something else- and incomplete- decorative only ELECTRICAL GOODS.
