MENABREA, LUIGI FEDERICO (1809-1896) "Sketch of The Analytical Engine Invented by Charles Babage Esq. by L F Menabrea of Turin Officer of The Military Engineers", with notes by the Translator (Lady Lovelace) extracted from the scientific memoirs Vol III, published Richard and John E Taylor, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, London 1843, tooled and gilded burgundy leather bound, with hand-written notes to front page and hand-written inscription after notes by the translator to the frontispiece "Lady Lovelace" (bears old typed note "The Notes on the Fly Leaf of this Vol are undoubtedly by Wm King the co-operator (1786-1865) who was a great friend and adviser of Lady Lovelace. His periodical "Co-Operator" was published by Sickelmore of Brighton and this volume was bound by Manderson of Brighton. Lady Lovelace was daughter of Byron. She trans the notes in this vol." - This is the first separate edition of arguably the most important paper in the history of digital computing before modern times, extremely rare piece, possibly one of six copies including two at Harvard CONDITION REPORTS Cover: with tooled and gilded "LOVELACE". Appears basically sound, though with some scuff marks - see image to front and back. Typed note to interior, loose and with rough edges. Pencil note to first blank page "PJ/- 35/-", hand-written inscription opposite, obviously written by the same hand but at different times. Reading notes: they refer to Ada Lovelace, lineage, birth etc and note at bottom "Babage said of this translation and notes that nothing but genius could have done it". Blank pages and frontispiece with some small areas of browning/staining. Frontispiece with hand-written inscription "Lady Lovelace" below "with notes by the translator". Next page no 666, last numbered page 731. Page 711 being a diagram belonging to Note D and the fold-out "Diagram for the Computation by the engine of the numbers of Bernoulli", with two folds to the rear followed by a single blank page and the end page. The diagram with rough edges to the far right hand side. Most pages, whilst slightly browned and with some minor scuffing, all extant from page 720 - page 731 - some brown spotting to the lower corners - see images for further detail. Items of particular interest: markings to the margin on page 694 by the second paragraph "The analytical engine is an ......." and page 695 four various markings to the third paragraph down.
