1950 Velocette LE 200 Mk3 Police Bike Veloce Ltd based in Birmingham were a small family-owned, hand-building manufacturer which specialised in quality products and kept them at the forefront of European bike scene despite being much smaller than their competitors; BSA, Norton and Triumph. This quality translated to biking-success with its record breaking 24 hours at 100mph record as well as two world championship titles in the 350cc class (1949/1950). Despite no longer being around, Voleces innovative designs have deep roots within biking design today, with concepts such as positive-stop foot shift and swinging arm rear suspension with hydraulic dampers being patented. Often referred to as Noddy Bikes, Velocette LEs were adopted by the British police force for patrol due to their known reliability. The name stemmed from officers being told not to salute sergeants due to concerns of dangerous driving and therefore were advised to nod - hence becoming known as Noddies. While this rather quirky side to the LEs didnt get away from their impressive quality which was utilised by police services and remained popular until the early seventies. LE, standing for Little Engine was a water-cooled, flat-twinned 149cc which aimed to fill the gap in the market for cheap, efficient vehicles that could be relied upon. This sophisticated design ultimately cost Veloce, as despite the Vellocette being their best selling model, the company was cripilled by high machinery costs in production which proved too expensive, ultimately leading to their demise in 1971.With production of the Velocette beginning in 1948, this relatively early example offers a great historical piece of automobilia. This well presented 71 year old vehicle is very well priced and would compliment any collection.
