Stunning preparatory drawings in graphite, India ink, and gouache on BFK Rives brown paper that Art Nouveau and Art Deco designer and craftsman Rene Lalique designed for a pen and inkwell. They reveal Lalique's evolutionary ideas left in pencil. leading to the finalized color version of the luxurious writing instrument. Lalique created a pensive face with eyes shut set beneath a highlighted blue pansy flower. A similar design served to create "La Pensee" brooch in iridescent blue enamel, gold and diamonds and a pendant with a peal. The lower sheet includes a precise geometric design of an inkwell with foliage partially painted in blues and opaque white. Lalique wrote descriptive notes that are partially legible: "Porte plume...les 3 petites pensees...noires champleves. Partie... ajuste le cristal comme dans mes lunettes...Partie d'email translucide en pensees...et bagues..." On the upper right part, the number 691 is underlined. These drawings have never been seen publicly. They are unique studies of museum quality as they were acquired directly from the private collection of the descendants of Rene Lalique. Housed in a natural color wooden frame. Frame size: 9.80"L x 13.40"H x 0.75"W. Artwork dimensions: upper sheet 8.35"L x 9"H; Lower sheet: 8.40"L x 2.60"H.
