London Transport BUS SIGNS comprising a 1950s/60s enamel DOLLY STOP PLATE (Request) in good condition, a 1930s/40s enamel 'EMERGENCY BOX' PLATE from a set of heavy lifting gear held at bus garages (edge chips) and a 1960s/70s plastic 'PAY AS YOU ENTER' SIGN for RF etc buses & coaches in good condition. [3]
London Transport bus stop enamel E-PLATE for Maidstone & District routes 130/131/132. An unusual example, not only because of the three routes on one plate but also because it shows the operator's name three times. This would have been located on a London Transport bus stop in Tonbridge. In very good, ex-stop condition. [1]
London Transport enamel BUS & COACH STOP FLAG (Compulsory). A double-sided, hollow ''boat'-type sign in the traditional 1950s-60s 'bullseye' (pre-roundel) style. Measures 18" x 15" (46cm x 39cm) and is complete with original fixing rods. In very good, ex-use condition with a good shine, albeit dusty, and just a couple of small chips. [1]
London Underground 1950s/60s enamel STATION FRIEZE PLATE for the Piccadilly Line with the line name on the bar of a traditional London Transport bullseye. An end-of-section example, it is 27" (71cm) long and is the slightly deeper (9.5"/24cm) type used at Green Park station. In excellent condition, just a few very minor blemishes. [1]
A brass Leyland Motors Ltd "By [Royal] Appointment" VEHICLE BADGE c.1920s. A very intricate pressing containing the Royal Coat of Arms inscribed 'Hon y Soit Qui Mal y Pense' and 'Dieu et mon Droit' and with enamel inlays in red and blue. In very good condition with no significant damage noted, just minor abrasions to the enamel. A most unusual item believed to have been carried on the radiator grilles of early Leyland fire engines, evidenced by the red scroll. [1]
London Transport bus stop enamel Q-PLATE 'Service 157 Merton Garage Journeys' which would have been located on the section off the main line of the route towards the bus garage and on which passengers could travel. It is unusual for LT to use the word 'service' rather than 'route'. A small repair around the screw-hole otherwise in very good, ex-stop condition. [1]
London General Omnibus Company 'ON WAR SERVICE' LAPEL BADGE issued during WW1 to staff who were regarded as being in a reserved occupation and not to be seen as avoiding military service. Dated 1915 with serial number 5348 on reverse and made of brass with enamel inlay. A scarce badge in good, lightly-used condition. [1]
London Transport bus stop enamel E-PLATE 'Imperial Bus' for this family bus company (A Moore & Sons) which ran in the Windsor area from 1917 until taken over by Alder Valley in 1987. This is a very early e-plate, likely to date from the 1940s, possibly even earlier, in the first style without black edging at top and bottom. A very scarce plate, not seen at auction before. In good, ex-stop condition. [1]
London Underground enamel DESTINATION PLATE for Amersham/Rickmansworth on the Metropolitan Line. Double-sided, reversable. We are not sure whether the O/P Stock ever worked on this section so it could be that these plates were adapted for use on T-Stock. A most unusual variant in good, ex-use condition. [1]
London General Country Services Driver's/Conductor's CAP BADGE in red and grey enamel, matching the fleetname of the country buses. The company was formed in 1932 to take over the General's country services (East Surrey & National) but was absorbed by London Transport in 1933, resulting in a rather short-lived use of these badges. In very good, lightly-used condition. [1]
c 1980s London Underground framed enamel PLATFORM ROUNDEL from Earl's Court station. A tunnel-side sign likely to have been on the Piccadilly Line platforms. Measuring a very collectable size of 24" x 20" (61cm x 51cm), the sign is made up of 3 pieces plus the bronze frame and is in excellent condition. [1 sign in 4 parts]
London Transport 1950s/60s Country Buses BUS STOP SHELTER PLATE 'Epping Green' from a 'Keston'-type wooden shelter from either the Herts or the Essex hamlet of this name, both of which were served by LT buses, either on routes 308/308A or route 372 respectively. A single-sided enamel sign, 18" (42cm) square. A couple of chips to the enamel but otherwise good. [1]
1930s London Underground enamel PLATFORM BULLSEYE SIGN from Swiss Cottage station on the Bakerloo (now Jubilee) Line. A small, one-piece bullseye measuring 24" (60cm) across and very slightly curved to fit the tunnel wall. Likely to date from the opening of the station in 1939. Some well-executed restoration evident at both ends of the bar but, with that proviso, in very good condition. [1]
London Transport bus stop enamel E-PLATE for route 169B Mon-Fri Rush Hours & Midday. This route ran from 1965-69 between Barking and Claybury with RT buses from Barking garage and with rush hour extensions to the Hainault Industrial Estate and to the Remploy Factory, on one of which extensions this plate would have been located. In ex-stop condition with a small chip touched in. [1]
London "General" Omnibus Co CAP BADGE in maroon enamel in the Underground Group 'bar & circle' design. It is thought that these much less common maroon versions may have been issued to crews in the 1920s on the General's private hire and excursion services but this is unconfirmed. In very good condition. [1]
London Transport enamel BUS & COACH STOP FLAG (Bus Compulsory, Coach Request). A double-sided, hollow ''boat'-type sign in the traditional 1950s-60s 'bullseye' (pre-roundel) style. Carries the location ref 3644 and measures 18" x 15" (46cm x 39cm). In very good, ex-use condition with some small chips, mainly on the leading edge but an excellent shine. Retains its original fixing attachments. [1]
London Transport bus stop enamel Q-PLATE 'Buses to Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill only, 16:30 - 18:30, Monday - Friday'. We haven't been able to work out where this was located but it would have been on a bus stop only used in the evening rush hour, presumably because of traffic congestion. An unusual 'Q9'-size plate, equivalent to 9 e-plates, which whould have used all the space on the stop flag. A couple of repairs at the edges, otherwise very good. [1]
London Transport coach stop enamel, double-vertical E-PLATE for Green Line express route 724 destinated High Wycombe in white lettering on a blue background. Double-vertical plates were usually located at bus stations, of which there were several used by this route, eg Harlow, Hertford but the plate may also have been located in Watford. The word 'Express' unusually appears after the destination. In very good, ex coach-stop condition. [1]
Underground Group Tramways ENAMEL TRAM STOP from the 1920s "Tramways - Trams stop by request". Single-sided sign with the classic domed design and Underground Group 'bullseye'. A few stains and a couple of very small chips (some rust on the reverse) but overall this is a fine example of this very scarce sign. [1]
London Transport Country Buses & Green Line Coaches Inspector's hallmarked, solid silver CAP BADGE with enamel inlays. Although the hallmark is indistinct, the badge is from the first issue in 1933. Serial no 2195 on the reverse. Some wear from many decades of polishing but overall in good condition. [1]
London Transport Country Buses 1950s/60s BUS STOP SHELTER PLATE 'Two Waters Garage' from one of the 'Keston'-type wooden shelters at this much-missed bus garage in Hemel Hempstead that was opened in 1935 and demolished in 1997. A single-sided enamel sign, this is a different from the one in our last sale and says 'London Transport' on the bar signifying that there was also a free-standing stop flag by this shelter. 18" (42cm) square. Some small chips but good overall. [1]
London Underground 1950s/60s enamel FRIEZE PANEL from the platforms at Holland Park station on the Central Line together with matching 'bullseye' FRIEZE PLATE, forming an integral, closed-ends set. Combined length 69" (177cm). Chips around some screw-holes but otherwise in very good condition. [2]
Croydon Corporation Tramways enamel STAFF PASS 'C.C. Tramways, to & from work or when on duty - No 77'. 2.25" (6cm) in diameter, with original leather armband and thought to date from the 1920s or earlier. Reverse has details of lost and found with reward for returning. These badges would have been withdrawn upon the formation of London Transport in 1933. In good, ex-use condition. [1]
London Underground enamel on bronze SIGN 'Monument Station'. Measuring 51" x 3.5" (129cm x 9cm), this is thought to have been located on the railings at one of the street-level station entrances. The sign has a couple of slight distortions and some of the enamel letters have been touched in. [1]
London Underground enamel PLATFORM ROUNDEL SIGN from Westminster station. A modern "silhouette" roundel in an integral alluminium frame and from the Jubilee Line platforms. Measures 48" x 39" (122cm x 99cm) and weighs approx 26kg. A few very minor blemishes and a small chip to the enamel in the bar but generally in very good condition. [1]
