Max Length: 22.27 mm (across bezel side); Thickness of band: 0.88 mm; Width of band: 4.85 mm; Weight: 3.37g; Bezel measurements are as follows: Length:12.74 mm; Width: 9.55 mm; Thickness: 1.58 mm. UK N, Finger-ring with bezel in the form of a bourchier knot, the band worked as if ropes wreathed with ribbons. Traces of white enamel survive on what appears to be one of the ribbons, and it is possible – although no other traces survive – that the ring was once extensively enamelled in two or more tones. The motto ‘usque ad finem’ – meaning ‘to the very end’. Though the motto is often discussed in terms of death in texts of the 16th and 17th century, its combination with a knot – echoing the ‘fede’ form – may relate to a marital union. Oman (1974, 41) notes that Roman Capitals ceded to italic script in the second quarter of the 17th century.

This rectangular copper alloy Roman plate brooch features a hound in full chase on a blue and red enamel background. It has been classified as a Mackreth OBJECT 3.b4. Examples of enamelled plate brooches have been found from across Roman Britain and most probably date to the 2nd century AD. Hounds and hares are among the favourite subjects seen on enamelled plate brooches, which also includes horses, birds, fish and insects. Hares with hounds in chase appear on a range of other artefacts including knife handles and pottery beakers and the popularity of the theme suggests that hare coursing may have been a common activity in the Roman world.
