* THE MOTHER OF GOD OF KAZAN IN A SILVER OKLAD EARLY 20TH CENTURY, OIL ON PANEL, MAKER`S MARK E.U. IN CYRILLIC, ST PETERSBURG 31.7 by 27 cm. The painting is done in the academic style, and the icon demonstrates a typical example of a 20th-century commission, made in a professional studio. The expensive oklad successfully combines the soft embossing in bas-relief and the decorative Art Nouveau frame with the stylised ornament of flowers and foliage. The haloes are decorated with very fine painted enamel in eight colours, confirming that the oklad was made in a leading silversmith studio of St Petersburg. Thus this icon is doubtlessly an expensive commissioned image.
