The platform lever escapement used on the current lot with its distinctive right-angled lever layout, `butterfly` endpiece and shaped tail can be directly compared with an example as used by Jacot and Drocourt illustrated in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development on page 114.

A nickel plated brass `Ever Ready` electric mantel timepiece. Retailed by London Stereoscopic Company, circa 1902. The movement with toggle escapement regulated by the back and forth motion of the pendulum swinging beneath the dial controlled by two electromagnetic coils in the base of the case and with motionwork housed behind the white enamel Arabic numeral dial inscribed LONDON STEREOSCOPIC COMPANY, 106 & 108 REGENT ST, LONDON W. to centre, within a moulded nickel finish bezel with turned finials and raised on four columnar uprights mounted on a moulded mahogany box base with drop-down flap for battery access to front and on four screw adjustable brass feet, the mechanism with mirror backed metal framed bevel-glazed cover, 46cm (18ins) high. The current lot was manufactured by the Ever Ready Specialities Company to a design by Herbert Scott patented in 1902. An almost identical example was sold at Christie`s, King Street sale of The Professor E.T. Hall collection of Important Clocks and Scientific Instruments 11th July 2003 lot 126.

The four pillar single weight movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, deadbeat escapement, wood-rod pendulum and tapered plates, the two-piece circular white enamel Roman numeral dial with blued steel beetle-and-poker hands and decorative foliate cast brass bezel, the arch glazed case with brass vase finials and stepped cornice fronted with a grotesque mask, above slender ebonised columns flanking dial and foliate moulded applied decoration to upper quadrants of the front door, the inverted ogee shaped base with scroll moulded pendant crest, 117cm (46ins) high.

The four pillar single fusee movement with arched plates, anchor escapement and signed Dwerrihouse & Carter, Berkeley Square to the lower margin of the backplate, the 4 inch circular white enamel Roman numeral dial with blued steel spade hands and cast lacquered brass glazed bezel, the arched case with hinged carrying handle above moulded brass bordered front incorporating a lozenge shaped decorative panel beneath dial, on cavetto moulded skirt base with squab feet (case distressed and lacking rear door), 25cm (10ins) high excluding handle. Dwerrihouse and Carter are recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from Berkeley Square, London 1802-23.

A Regency patinated bronze, ormolu and white marble `Weeks Museum` type figural mantel timepiece, Thomas Coleman, London, Circa 1815. The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with anchor escapement and 3.5 inch circular white Roman numeral enamel dial with blued steel Breguet hands within a milled gilt bezel, the case surmounted with an ormolu bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st. Duke of Wellington above drum supported on foliate scroll volutes and festoon applied block flanked by patinated bronze seated Classical females each reading a book, the left hand book gilt highlighted and signed T. Coleman, 6 Westmorland St., London, 1797 to the open pages, on marble plinth base applied with gilt grotesque mask flanked by foliate festoons and with lobed gilt bun feet, (lacking pendulum) 31cm (12ins) high. Thomas Coleman is recorded in Baillie, G.H, Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being admitted to the Clockmakers` Company in 1794, gaining his Freedom in 1806. He was subsequently elevated to Liveryman in 1813 and recorded working from Westmorland Street, London until 1840. The presence of the ormolu bust surmount of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington suggests that the current lot was made shortly after the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo on 18th June 1815.

A French Louis XIV ormolu mounted tortoiseshell bracket clock, Antoine Gaudron, Paris, circa 1700 The six back-pinned baluster pillar movement of two week duration with large spring barrels, verge escapement with silk suspension and cycloidal cheeks, and high position numbered countwheel to the upper right hand corner of the backplate for striking the hours and once at the half hour with a vertically pivoted hammer on a bell mounted within the top of the case, the backplate signed Gaudron A Paris to lower edge, the unusual shaped iron dial plate faced with pewter polished and lacquered to simulate mother-of-pearl and applied with twelve-piece white enamel Roman numeral cartouche chapter ring with fine pierced and engraved foliate pendant to every numeral, Arabic minutes to outer track and original steel hands above shaped pendulum aperture bordered with foliate cast mounts, the break-arch case with gilt urn finials to the acanthus corner-mounted ogee shaped upstand and foliate cast frieze emerging from the sides of the gilt cavetto moulded cornice, the canted front angles applied with fine scroll-cast female terms above acanthus open scrolls, the sides with brass-edged rectangular side windows and conforming terms to rear edges over swollen lower sections, the base edged with a gilt band interrupted by a pendant arch inset with foliate cast mount to apron, on acanthus cast feet, 53cm (21ins) high. Antoine Gaudron is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from around 1675. In 1689 he was established at Place Dauphine at `La Perle` and then at `La Renommee` in 1709. He died a wealthy man in 1714. Two fine `Religieuse` spring clocks by him (including one with unique astronomical calendar) are illustrated in Plomp, Reinier Early French Pendulum Clocks 1658-1700 pages 80-3, the movement of the current lot, although slightly later, is remarkably similar to those pictured in figs 146 and 149. The manner in which the dial of the current lot is finished is particularly noteworthy. A pewter veneer is applied over the iron dial plate which is polished and finished in such a way as to simulate mother-of-pearl, forming the background onto which a finely engraved and pierced chapter ring is applied.
