Im Zentrum thronende Bischofsfigur mit Mitra sowie einer stehenden weiblichen Gestalt, dazwischen stilisierters Ranken- und Palmettenwerk. In der Wölbung vier Halbkreis-bogige Kartuschen, ebenfalls figürlich gestaltet. Jeweils mit Wiedergabe eines Paares, etwa einer Frauengestalt, die einem Mann eine Frucht reicht. Die Bildszenen blau emailiert, die Zwickelfelder dazwischen in Türkis, darin jeweils eine geflügelte Fantasiefigur, die wohl einen Basilisken darstellt. Die Unterseite graviert mit zentraler Rosette, mit achtstrahligem Stern, umzogen von sich überschneidenden Rippenbögen mit Lilienabschluss. Bald wurden Krementz & Co. die Pioniere in der Herstellung von Knöpfen aus massiven Gold, die es aber auch in einer vergoldeten Version gab. Neben Knöpfen spezialisierte sich das Haus auf Manschettenknöpfe und Krawattennadeln. Um 1900 war die Firma weltweit führend in der Kategorie Herrenschmuck. Zu dieser Zeit begann das Unternehmen auch Schmuck für Damen herzustellen. Designs wie das Kleeblatt wurden bei Schmuckstücken für die Dame wie auch für den Herren angeboten. So findet sich dieses bei der vorliegenden Brosche und auch als Zierkopf bei der angebotenen Krawattennadel. Nachdem er zunächst Psychologie in Ohio studiert, leistet Wesselmann, während dem zu Beginn der 1950er Jahre ausgebrochenen Koreakrieg, seinen Militärdienst ab. Nach dem Krieg absolviert er ein Kunststudium in seiner Heimatstadt Cincinnati sowie in New York. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere arbeitete er noch expressionistisch, gibt dies jedoch früh auf und wendet sich dem Stil zu, der es heute unter dem Begriff Pop-Art zu Weltruhm gebracht hat. Tom Wesselmann zählt zu den Pop-Art Künstlern der ersten Generation und steht so auf Augenhöhe mit international verehrten Künstlern wie Roy Lichtenstein und Andy Warhol. Doch es gibt signifikante Unterschiede zu dem Werk seiner Künstlerkollegen. Während viele herausragende Vertreter der Pop-Art ihren Fokus auf eine kritisch-ironische Besprechung der modernen Konsum- und Warenwelt richten, konzentriert sich Wesselmann in seinen Arbeiten eher darauf, einen ästhetischen Blick in die Dinge des Alltags zu ermöglichen. Im Jahr 1983 wird der Grundstein für die uns vorliegende Arbeit "Sitting Nude" gelegt. In diesem Jahr überträgt der Künstler seine Zeichnungen erstmals auf Metall. Bei Wesselmann besteht zwar schon zuvor großes Interesse an den Formen des weiblichen Körpers, das Aufbringen der Zeichnung auf Metall und besonders das anschließende Ausschneiden mittels Laserstrahl sind aber neue Entwicklungen in seiner Arbeitstechnik. Bei unserer Arbeit aus dem Jahr 1987 hat Tom Wesselmann diese Technik bereits weitestgehend erprobt. Doch nicht nur aus diesem Grund stellt "Sitting Nude" eine charakteristische Arbeit des Künstlers dar. Um seine weiblichen Akte klar von der Porträt-Gattung abzugrenzen verzichtet Wesselmann bewusst auf jegliche Gesichtszüge. Lediglich weibliche Attribute wie Lippen, Haare und Brüste arbeitet der Künstler heraus. So provoziert er den Betrachter indem er bewusst Frauen auf ihre Körper reduziert, lässt gleichzeitig aber genug Raum für eigene Interpretationen des Betrachters. Tom Wesselmann hat sich als Mitbegründer der Pop-Art in die Kunstgeschichte einzementiert. "Sitting Nude" steht hier nicht nur exemplarisch für die technischen Innovationen, sondern auch für den neuen ästhetischen Ansatz den Wesselmann als einer der ersten der Weltöffentlichkeit präsentiert.
