A CLOISONNE ENAMEL 'DA JI' WALL VASE, CHINA, 18th CENTURYOf double gourd shape, the upper and lower bulbs centered by characters reading 'da' and 'ji' ('great fortune') respectively. Tied at the waist with a gilt-bronze flowing ribbon issuing loops and rolling ends along the sides. Finely decorated in bright enamels against a turquoise ground with colorful double-gourds borne on scrolling leafy vines, a bat diligently overlooking with its wings wrapped around the rim. The gilt-bronze back finely chased and incised with intertwining lotus scroll against a ring-punched ground with an aperture for mounting.Provenance: From the private collection of Sara Fredericks, probably acquired in New York during the 1960s, and thence by descent. The back with an old label, '40', and inscribed with a collector's number, '40'. Sara Fredericks (1903-1986) was a designer and retailer who specialized in women's luxury fashion for more than 50 years. After her marriage to Frederick Cohen, who was in the shoe business, she began selling dresses out of her home to women who admired her clothes. ''She lived the life her customers lived,'' said Pauline Trigere, who was among the designers who considered Miss Fredericks a friend as well as a client. Others in that category were Geoffrey Beene, James Galanos, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, and Hubert de Givenchy. ''She had impeccable taste,'' Miss Trigere said, “her customers trusted her."Condition: Good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, including expected pitting. Minor flaking and small losses to enamels, tiny nicks here and there, two small dents with old fills.Weight: 800 gDimensions: Height 23.5 cm Wall vases were particularly popular during the reign of Qianlong and are known to have adorned the walls of the Sanxitang (The Hall of Three Rarities), a tiny studio next to the Imperial bedchamber in the Yangxindian. They were produced in a variety of materials, including porcelain, cloisonne enamel and lacquer, and occasionally inscribed with poems by the Emperor himself, such as the present lot. Compare several porcelain wall vases in the collection of the Palace Museum Beijing, illustrated in The Life of Emperor Qianlong, The Macau Museum of Art, Macau, 2002, cat. nos. 63-2 to 63-9. The present wall vase displays the ornate aesthetic and technical mastery that characterizes cloisonne wares of the High Qing period. The double-gourd vase is particularly fine in the vibrant tones achieved in its enamel and the elegant execution of the linework of the cloisons.Literature comparison: Compare a Yangcai sgraffiato 'bats and clouds' double-gourd form wall vase, with a Qianlong gilt six-character mark in horizontal line and of the period, at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2018, lot 3036. Compare a pair of embellished gilt-repousse copper wall vases, dated to the Qianlong period, at Christie's New York, 13-14 September 2012, lot 1299. A PAIR OF YELLOW-GROUND AND GREEN-ENAMELLED 'DRAGON' DISHES, QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIODChina, 1736-1795. Delicately potted, each with shallow rounded sides supported on a short tapered foot and rising to a scalloped rim dressed in green between black line borders, the interior finely decorated with a central front-facing five-clawed dragon writhing around a flaming pearl, the cavetto similarly decorated to the interior and exterior with sinuously striding dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls, all interspersed by leafy floral scroll. The recessed bases glazed white, each with an underglaze blue six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and of the period. (2)Provenance: Spink & Son, London, United Kingdom. From the private estate of Charles H. Royston, Chicago, United States, by repute acquired from the above.Condition: Excellent condition with expected old wear and minimal firing irregularities. One dish with a light scratch to the underside.Weight: 108 g and 107.4 g Dimensions: Diameter 13.6 cm (each) The color yellow, featured on the present dishes, held immense importance during the Qing Dynasty, representing the emperor's unparalleled authority as it was known as the 'Yellow Heaven' color, signifying the Mandate of Heaven. Exclusively reserved for the imperial family, the color emphasized their elevated status, setting them apart from the rest of society. The presence of a five-clawed dragon on each dish also stood as a symbol of great significance. The five-clawed dragon motif was prominently featured on imperial regalia and its usage was strictly regulated, exclusively designated for the emperor and the imperial household.Literature comparison:The design of the current dishes is based on an important Kangxi-marked prototype, fancifully incorporating imperial symbolism. For a prototype of the current design, with a Kangxi mark and of the period, see Wang Qingzheng, Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Shanghai, 1998, pl. 199. It is rare to have matched pairs stay together and come to market. The current lot compares well to the examples offered at Sotheby's, but has a slightly stronger design. AN IMPERIAL PAIR OF QUADRILOBED CLOISONNE ENAMEL 'LOTUS' VASES, QIANLONG FIVE-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIODChina, 1736-1795. To each box, a collector's label, 'Lally & Co. New York' with handwritten inventory number '4289.' James J. Lally was a renowned antique dealer and connoisseur, recognized as one of the greatest scholar-dealers of Chinese art, who has been a leader in the field for more than 40 years. After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia University, Lally joined Sotheby's where he held many positions within the Chinese art department. In 1970 he served as the director of Chinese works of art at Sotheby's in New York and Hong Kong, and by 1983 was named president of Sotheby's in North America. In 1986, he founded his namesake gallery, J. J. Lally & Co., at 41 East 57th Street in New York - just a few blocks away from the MoMA, to provide advisory services for keen collectors. Lally fondly recalls the moment, not long after he opened his gallery, when a young man walked through the door with a Shang Dynasty gong-a bronze vessel shaped like a gravy boat-decorated with a dragon and tiger and in beautiful condition. It was, Lally described, “one of the most important objects I ever had in my hands." The young man said he had inherited it from his father and was not really interested in Chinese art himself. He wanted to buy a sailboat and wondered if the gong was valuable enough to pay for that. “I was very happy to tell him that it was valuable enough to buy two sailboats," Lally noted. The gallery helped to establish New York as a major center of commerce for Chinese art and allowed Lally to concentrate on his own specific interests, particularly early ceramics, ritual bronze vessels, archaic jade carvings and sculpture. Lally brought a learned approach to his work, publishing detailed, scholarly catalog that have remained important reference guides within the field. This meticulous approach continued when he produced his own exhibitions and catalog. Giuseppe Eskenazi, dubbed the “Godfather of Chinese Antiques," and one of the world's most esteemed Chinese art dealers, also spoke highly of Lally for his achievements in the industry, alongside William Chak from Hong Kong, and the Marchant family from London. In the spring of 2023, Christie's and Bonhams conducted single owner sales of Lally's collection which broke several auction records.Condition: Excellent condition with expected manufacturing irregularities and wear to gilt, minute hairlines, dents and nicks to enamels. Compare a closely related pair of cloisonne enamel 'lotus' vases, 36 cm high, also with five-character Qianlong marks, the fifth character being 'ze', illustrated by Brinker and Lutz, Chinese Cloisonne: The Pierre Uldry Collection, Asia Society, New York, 1989, no. 282, p. 74, where the authors note: “During the Qianlong period (1736-1795) an additional character, the significance of which is obscure, is occasionally found below the usual mark." The authors go on to suggest the 'ze' character may be an indication of the use or category of the object on which it is inscribed.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's London, 11 May 2010, lot 110 Price: GBP 37,250 or approx. A CANTON ENAMEL 'EUROPEAN SUBJECT' BOX AND COVER DEPICTING SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS, QIANLONG PERIODExpert's note: The choice of two biblical scenes of seduction to be shown on the same object is unusual for canton enamel. The stories of Susanna and the Elders as well as Joseph and Potiphar's wife deal with the same subject: a lust-filled pursuer, Potiphar's wife and the Elders, and an unwilling victim, Joseph and Susanna. Both stories end with the subsequent redemption of the victims. In one story Susanna's reputation is restored and the Elders are punished, and in the other Joseph is made second to the Pharaoh. Both tales were a frequent subject in 18th century European painting, but Susanna and the Elders was by far the more frequently visited subject.China, 1736-1795. Abstinence plaques were made in various materials, including jade, bamboo, painted enamel, and porcelain. AN IMPERIAL CLOISONNE ENAMEL JARDINIERE, SUPPORTED BY THREE GILT-BRONZE 'KNEELING BOYS' FEET, QIANLONG PERIODPublished: Cohen & Cohen, Tyger Tyger!, Antwerp, 2016, pages 72-73, no. 32.China, 1736-1795. The vessel with gently flared sides and supported by three feet, cast in gilt copper-alloy as kneeling boys dressed in voluminous robes incised with lotus blossoms and leafy vines, draped in billowing scarves, their faces well detailed with smiling expressions. The exterior of the vessel finely decorated with two rows of rectangular panels separated by raised gilt bands of twisted-rope design, each panel with five flowerheads brightly enameled in shades on a of blue, yellow, green, and white, borne on scrolling tendrils reserved on a rich red ground. The rim neatly incised with lotus blossoms and foliate scroll.Provenance: Cohen & Cohen, Antwerp, 2016. A noted private collection in New York, USA, acquired from the above.Condition: Excellent condition with some old wear, expected small losses with associated old fills, minor rubbing to gilt, minor nicks to enamels and metals. Shallow surface scratches. Expected manufacturing flaws such as minimal pitting. The interior has a good naturally grown patina with malachite encrustations.Weight: 1,484 g Dimensions: Height 18.2 cm, Diameter 15.5 cm The present vessel's bucket shape echoes a rustic wooden pail with vertical slats bound by rope and is clearly designed as an amusing variant of this standard artisan vessel, executed in expensive cloisonne enamels. Such conceits were very popular with the early Qing emperors, who took a particular pleasure in instructing their Palace and external craftsmen to recreate familiar objects in entirely different materials: archaic bronzes in jade, eel-trap nets in porcelain, bronze incense burners in lapis lazuli, or rhinoceros horn carvings in silver.Jardinieres of this shape still exist in the Qing Court Collections and have been published. Indeed, some still survive with additional embellishments at the top confirming that they were intended to be displayed in the Forbidden City and other Imperial palaces as pails of flowers, because some were deliberately fitted with simulated flower arrangements comprising miniature flowering trees, created with curling wire branches and suspending green hardstone leaves set with carnelian, crystal and other semi-precious hardstones.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related cloisonne flowerpot, dated to the mid-Qing dynasty, in the National Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 4, Cloisonne in the Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, p. 35, no. 6. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE IMPERIAL ENAMELED COPPER HANDWARMER, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIODChina, (1736-1795). Each side of the vessel is painted intricately with long tailed birds and butterflies in ornate gardens with rockwork, shrubs and flowers, within pink kuilong-bordered panels surrounded by peony, prunus, and lotus blossoms, all reserved on a pale lilac ground, the neck with a key-fret band. The pierced copper-repousse lid is finely enameled and gilt with a central shou character in openwork among colorful clouds, the sides with shaped panels enclosing floral splays reserved against a brocade diapered ground. To the short sides, movable and hinged gilt-bronze overhanging handles. The interior with rich turquoise enamel. The recessed base with a six-character seal mark in blue enamel da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and of the period.Provenance: From a private estate in Belgium, formerly in the collection of Paul Doumer. The base inscribed with an old collector's number '196.' Joseph Athanase Doumer (1857-1932), commonly known as Paul Doumer, was the President of France from 13 June 1931 until his assassination on 7 May 1932. He was Governor-General of French Indochina from 1897 to 1902, and successfully lobbied the French government to approve construction of the Indochina-Yunnan railway in 1898. He served as Minister of Finance of France three times and as President of the French Senate from 1927 until the 1931 presidential election, which he won.Condition: Absolutely original and unrestored condition. Only minor old wear and expected manufacturing irregularities. Minor losses to enamels, mostly on the cover. Slight warping, light scratches, and a few fine and hardly visible hairlines. The condition is very well visible on the images, with no hidden damages whatsoever. The bronze fittings with a good natural patina. Overall exceptionally well preserved, especially given its age, fragility and rarity.Weight: 526 gDimensions: Length 14 cm Expert's note: Without question a masterpiece of Chinese 18th century enameling, this handwarmer exemplifies the softness and elegance achieved on the finest of enameled copper wares produced at the Palace workshops during the first half of the Qianlong reign. The delicacy in the use of the enamels is a key feature of the Palace workshops, allowing for considerable subtlety of expression. The brilliant, more opaque enamels used for the decorative borders in contrast to the softer main subject, demonstrate the range of possibilities available to Court artists. Of the two main Palace painted enamel arts (on glass and on copper), those on copper are more frequent. During the Qianlong reign enameled copper wares, including snuff bottles, ran into the thousands, whereas enameled glass wares were produced only in the low hundreds. Handwarmers, however, were never produced in glass, and therefore must be considered as exceedingly rare, although made from copper.A rough estimate of the total number of enameled copper handwarmers produced during the Qianlong reign comes to less than one hundred, of which only few remain in private hands to this day. This is mainly due to the greater difficulty of producing them successfully, the need for multiple firings to correctly mature different colors and layers of enamel, and the much higher failure rate during production, due to the complex firing and re-firing process necessary to create the enameled openwork copper-repousse cover. It was probably for this reason that the Imperial records also show that the Emperor only rarely distributed enameled openwork copper wares as gifts, preferring to keep most of them for Imperial use, while gifts of standard enameled metal wares were apparently quite frequent.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related enamel handwarmer, also with a Qianlong mark and of the period, 14 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 24.80.473a, b. A RARE FAMILLE ROSE RUBY-PINK ENAMELED PETAL-LOBED BOWL, YONGZHENG PERIODChina, 1723-1735. The deep rounded sides supported on a short foot with a row of petals rising to a lobed rim. The interior is finely enameled with a single peony spray. A soft ruby pink glaze covers the exterior stopping neatly at the foot. The base is covered in a transparent glaze.Provenance: From an old private collection in the United Kingdom. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and minuscule firing irregularities.Weight: 133.3 g Dimensions: Diameter 10.9 cm Most scholars believe that pink enamel seems first to have appeared in the Chinese palette at the end of the Kangxi reign, in about AD 1720. Microscopic examination of this pink enamel has shown red particles immersed in a clear lead-potassium-silicate glass. The rose color was due to minute colloidal particles of gold. The Chinese rose enamel appears different from the European equivalent - the so-called 'Purple of Cassius', developed by Andreas Cassius of Leyden in c. 1670, for that it does not appear to have been made by the same method. The Chinese enamel has a much lower tin content and the scientists concluded that it was made not by precipitation but by making up a ruby glass and grinding this as a pigment to be dispersed in the clear enamel. The advantage of the Chinese method was that it used less gold, and it was also easier to achieve an even coloration within the enamel.Literature comparison:Compare a related ruby-pink glazed bowl with a foliate rim, 9.2 cm in diameter, dated late 18th/19th century, in the Chicago Museum of Art, accession number 1925.1007.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2013, lot 2108 Price: HKD 930,000 or approx. A CELADON-GLAZED FAMILLE ROSE 'HUNDRED ANTIQUES' PORCELAIN BOWL, QING DYNASTYChina, 18th - early 19th century. The large bowl stands on a short, slightly tapered foot and rises to an everted rim decorated with pink and aubergine scroll designs. The outside shows a pale-celadon ground and peony and prunus blossoms alongside alternating panels depicting auspicious objects surrounding a gu vase with a peony and a phoenix standing atop a scholar's rock with various floral sprays all around. The interior has a white ground, and the base is painted with manifold blossoms flanked by a circular decoration beneath the rim with bats carrying a peach next to double cash coins, stylized Shou signs, and ruyi medallions.Provenance: Property from an American private collection, acquired prior to 1973 and thence by descent in the family. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear, shallow surface scratches, minimal firing irregularities, small amounts of pitting, flaking, and few glaze recesses.Weight: 1,696 g Dimensions: Diameter 28.1 cm The present bowl is a good example of the innovative combination of adding one additional monochrome glaze to a white ground, a technique used effectively 18th century wares. The celadon glaze highlights the densely arranged floral motif: where it pools in the recesses along the edges, the deeper color contrasts with a lighter tone on the extremities, from a single glaze thereby creating two subtle shades of green. The subject of decoration on the famille rose panels in the present bowl may be compared to the highly prized imperial wares in the falangcai palette. It appeared that the falangcai birds-and- flowers theme was popular from the Yongzheng period onwards, such as the bowl with a related design of a golden-tailed peacock standing on a rock in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Imperial Enamel Ware of the Qing Dynasty, 1979, no. 30. The highly detailed rendition of the birds and flowers are related to a painting entitled 'Glorious Spring', by the influential Court artist, Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1768), in the National Palace collection, Taipei, illustrated in Collected Works of Giuseppe Castiglione, 1982, p. 73, fig. 41. The bat alongside two cash coins creates a visual pun: The word for bat sounds similar to the word 'happiness,' while the word for coin is a homophonous link to the word 'before' or 'in front of.' These three parallels are meant to be interpreted as the blessing 'happiness before your eyes.' The bat, peach, and Shou sign all represent a blessing of longevity. A PAIR OF LARGE RUBY-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE BUDDHIST EMBLEM ALTAR ORNAMENTS, QING DYNASTYChina, 19th century. Each finely modeled and enameled in brilliant tones in the form of an open worked ruby-red medallion enclosing one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), one the Parasol (san), representing spiritual authority, reverence, and purity, and the other the Vase (ping), symbolizing eternal harmony, the receptacle for lustral water, the nectar of immortality. The turquoise-glazed bases each with an iron red six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi.Provenance: Collection of Milton Drexel Rutherford (1894-1976), acquired in China between c. 1930 and 1940, and thence by descent within the same family. The storage boxes padded with Russian and Chinese newspaper clippings from the period. Each altar stand inscribed in black ink to the base, 'China'. Milton Drexel (Rex) Rutherford was a US veteran and engineer. He lived and worked in the city of Chicago, excavating the tunnels for the city's subway. His proliferate collection began when a client gifted him an artifact from eastern Asia igniting a passion for collecting Asian art, including Kangxi ceramics as well as Japanese metalwork and lacquers. Condition: Superb condition with expected old wear, minor rubbing and flaking to enamels, occasional light scratches. Small glaze touchups inherent to manufacture, and other firing irregularities. The boxes worn, soiled and with minor damages.Weight: 1,934 g and 2,020 Dimensions: Height 38.5 cm and 38.3 cm Each emblem sits atop a lotus pod with recessed seeds nestled in a lotus blossom raised on a stem of chevrons flanked by openwork curling leaves, the whole raised on a domed base neatly enameled on a ruby-red ground with lappets framed by bands of ruyi-heads and key-fret, lappets, and covered in turquoise enamel on the interior. Each with an old fitted wood stand, finely carved with lotus lappets between two key-fret bands, dating to the late 19th century. Each with an old compartmented storage box, dating ca. 1930-1949. (6)The present lot belongs to a group of important altar ornaments placed in temples and chapels in front of Buddhist deities. The complicated openwork panels required a manual dexterity in handling the clay and testify of the technical virtuosity of the Jingdezhen potters at the kilns in Jiangxi province. Richly painted in the famille-rose enamel palette, they reflect the eclectic and ornate style of the period. As a serious student and active practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-1795) commissioned thousands of ritual implements and sacrificial utensils to furnish the renovated and newly built monasteries and temples as well as the numerous chapels and shrines in the palaces in the Forbidden City, Yuanmingyuan summer palace and the Chengde summer residence. Religious objects formed also part of the presents offered to family and court members. He is known, for example, to have lavished these on his beloved mother, the Empress Dowager Xiaosheng (1691-1771), who was a pious Buddhist. They equally played an essential role in the interchange of gifts to honor religious and diplomatic relations with the Dalai and Panchen Lamas who came to Chengde to pay homage to the Emperor.A complete set of the bajixiang, similar in design to the present lot, can be seen on an altar in front of a statue of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, in the Fanzonglou (Hall of Buddhism), a private chapel in the Forbidden City, see Qing gong Zang chuan fojiao wenwu/Culltural relics of Tibetan Buddhism Collected in the Qing Palace, Beijing, 1992, pl. 99-1, where related sets of altar ornaments in gilt copper and silver gilt are also illustrated, pls. 138 and 139. A 'QIANJIANG CAI' ENAMELED 'LUSH FORESTS AND HIGH BAMBOO' PLAQUE, BY JIN PINQING (1862-1908)Expert's note: Qianjiang cai or 'pastel palette' enamels reflected the late Qing potter's increasing inability to produce the more technically demanding vibrant colors of the earlier High Qing or the later Republic period. To borrow a modern aphorism however, the determined late Qing artisans turned this 'bug' into a 'feature' - notably the dreamlike faintness of these colors became popular with the melancholy intelligentsia of the time and led to masterworks by the best, with Cheng Men (1833-1908) and Jin Pinqing (1862-1908), the painter of the present lot, being the most renowned. The rectangular plaque painted in orange, green, and blue tones with thinly applied enamels depicting a forest landscape with hills and mountains, bamboo groves and pine trees in the foreground. Two scholars sit conversing in a field while a third approaches them on foot, two houses with a tranquil river running beside it which disappears into the mountains. The plaque with a lengthy dedication written by Wang Fengchi (1824-1898), a scholar and official who was friends with Jin Pinqing and often collaborated with him on porcelain paintings.Inscriptions: Top center, titled 'Lush Forests and High Bamboo', signed 'written by Jin Pinqing', two seals. Top left, inscribed 'Some time ago in the Yijin Studio in the capital, I saw an ink painting by the master Wang Jian from Taicang with a lush forest. The landscape was quite unique. The [present] painting was painted for me by Pinqing in the style of porcelain paintings from Zhushan. The paintings complement each other. The ink style is so gentle and mild like a breath of air. The [original] painting was done in the Spring of the Year of Dingchou [corresponding to 1877] in the third year of the Guangxu era. I am very touched, thus I wrote this dedication. Weight: 2,651 gDimensions: Image size 26.3 x 40.7 cm. Size incl. frame 34.1 x 48.6 cm. With an associated gilt wood frame. (2)Qianjiang is a term used to describe a type of over-glaze enameled ware that was very popular during the Late Qing/Early Republican Period. The term Qianjiang cai (enamels) or Qianjiang porcelain was only coined in the 1950s. Prior to that, annals or commentaries in the late Qing and Republican periods did not classify it as a new distinctive type of over-glaze enamel decorative technique on porcelain. The term was initially used to describe a distinct style of landscape painting by the Yuan master Huang Gongwang. It is typified by the use of a particular color scheme: varying ink tones for outlines and reddish-brown for other aspects such as foliage, flowing water, mountain shades etc. The term was subsequently used to describe a porcelain painting style that used similar techniques but with additional colors such as aquamarine, moss green, pale blue, red and light pink. The relationship between qianjiang and fencai painting has caused quite a bit of confusion. In terms of the decorating medium, qianjiang utilizes fencai enamels. The main difference is actually the source of inspiration for the painting because the Qianjiang school draws its inspiration from the Chinese literati style, whereas the typical fencai work is more akin to gongbi painting. For fencai painting, the areas within the outlines of the motif are first applied with an arsenic-based opaque white pigment. The deeper and lighter tones are then obtained by mixing the enamels with different amounts of this opaque substance. For Qianjiang, the enamels are applied directly without the opaque white pigment. Hence, the enamels are thin and lack tonal gradations, especially on the early qianjiang works.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's London, 16 May 2014, lot 1254Price: GBP 18,750 or approx. A FAMILLE ROSE 'HUNDRED DEER' (BAI LU) HU-FORM VASE, LATE QING TO EARLY REPUBLIC PERIODChina, 1850-1930. The pear-shaped body supported on a spreading foot, the shoulder set with a pair of dragon handles decorated in iron-red and gilt, the body finely enameled with a herd of deer amid pine and peach trees, all in a verdant landscape dotted with lingzhi mushrooms. The recessed base with an apocryphal iron-red six-character mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi. Provenance: London trade.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities.Weight: 11.7 kgDimensions: Height 46 cm The 'hundred deer' motif (not literally; 100 is a conventional number indicating abundance) was very popular, as the landscape depicted contains important symbolic references. The subject of deer has a long history in Chinese art, because it refers to the rebus where the Chinese word for 'deer' is a homophone for 'emolument' or 'civil service salary'. The 'hundred deer' motif therefore represents the ultimate success, a career in government service in Imperial China. The deer is also associated with Daoism and the Star God of Longevity, Shoulao, while the inclusion of peaches and lingzhi in the decoration is further symbolic of longevity. As such, the subject matter on the present vase alludes to a multitude of auspicious connotations.Deer were considered supernatural creatures in premodern China, and they appear frequently in scenes of immortals and magical lands. The imposing composition on the present lot also carries a second layer of meaning thanks to wordplay: the term for one hundred deer (bai lu) is a homonym for bailu: the economic, cultural, and social benefits that could accrue during an official career. The theme can thus be read as a wish to attain a position in government.Lingzhi is the sacred fungus of immortality that grows on the trunks or roots of trees including the pine. The lingzhi does not decay like other fungi but instead becomes woody and thus can survive for a long time. For this reason, it has become associated with longevity. Deer are reputed to be the only animals able to find lingzhi. Deer are sometimes shown holding the lingzhi in their mouth.Literature comparison:For a related vase from the Qing Court collection preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, see The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 85.
