Sir. Thomas Andrew Polson (1865-1946) was born in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, he was educated at Tuam Diocesan School and from there went into business. He was commissioned an officer in the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) and advanced to Major in July 1902. Polson was elected to the House of Commons at a bi-election as an Independent Conservative but was defeated by John Jacob Astor in 1922. He was a successful businessman having been Chairman of Butlins Ltd, Duffield Iron Corporation, Pye Ltd, Rolls Razor Ltd, and Director at a number of firms including Madame Tussaud's and Walker, Goldsmith and Silvermith Ltd.

The signature was obtained during her activities with the Air Transport Auxiliary. The ATA regularly used Haddenham Aerodrome and the nearby Inn. Amy Johnson was staying in the Inn when the signature was obtained.
