After the establishment of trade with the Ottoman Empire, British diplomats in the late 17th century began presenting clocks as gifts to Ottoman officials, leading to a break in the dominance of the French and Swiss in the market for timepieces. This eventually resulted in a high demand for British clocks and lucrative export businesses such as that of George Prior. Such was his success in this area that the word coined by the Turkish to describe a British-made timepiece, 'Pyrol', is a derivative of his surname. He is listed as being active in 1765-1812 at 31 Prescot Street, Goodman's Fields, London, when he was succeeded by his son Edward - Looms, Brian, Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, Complete 21st Century Edition, N.A.G.
