Although originally a portrait painter he soon became exclusively a miniaturist. He was one of the most fashionable portrait miniature artists of his day and was elevated to the position of miniature painter in ordinary to William IV in 1831. He occupied the same position during the reign of Queen Victoria until 1858. He was knighted in 1831
