A three colour gold and enamel snuff box by Jean-Joseph Barriere A three colour gold and enamel snuff box by Jean-Joseph Barriere, charge and discharge mark of Julien Alaterre, Paris, 1772-73, the rim numbered 1086, rectangular with canted corners, the lid inset with an oval enamel plaque painted with rustic lovers playing with a bird, bordered by a gold frame finely chased with palm sprays and laurel and surmounted by a mask, the reserve, sides and base enamelled in translucent steel grey over rippled engine turning, within borders variously chased with laurel, rosettes, scrolls and shells, 7.4cm wide Jean-Joseph Barriere was apprenticed to Charles-Nicolas-Loys Dumoussay in October 1750; in January 1763 he became a master, sponsored by Henri Delobel, and entered his mark: a crowned fleur-de-lys with two grains and the initials JJB. Records reveal the increasing quantities of gold used by Barriere from the mid 1770s, an apparent indication of his developing business, which is further endorsed by the number of extant snuff boxes with his maker s mark dating from this time. Barriere s work was admired by his contemporaries: in the magnificent collection of snuff boxes formed by Furst Carl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis there were eight boxes from his workshop, see Lorenz Selig, Golddosen des 18. Jahrhunderts aus dem Besitz der Fursten von Thurn und Taxis, Munich, 2007. A clipping from the Ramsden archives notes: Messrs Omar Ramsden and Alwyn C. Carr held an exhibition on Dec. 3rd. At 12 Old Burlington Street. The display consisted of a selection of work designed and executed by those gentlemen, in hand beaten silver and gold, enamels, wrought in iron and so forth. Some of the most interesting exhibits were the maces and chains, from which section the illustrations are taken. They included the mayoral chain of Woolwich, in hand beaten gold and enamels................and the civic mace of Woolwich in hand beaten silver.
