Nelson Interest: A Continental Porcelain Nelson, 2nd April Commemorative Armorial Dessert Plate, circular, centrally painted with a complex armorial incorporating the legend PALMAM QUI MERVIT FERAT within fruiting acorn borders punctuated by blue enamel swags inscribed in gilt NELSON SAN JOSEF, and NELSON 2DE APRIL, 22cm diameter This is a copy of a plate made for Lord Nelson, and which was part of a large service in the possession of Lady Hamilton at the time of Nelson`s death. The porcelain is thought to be French, an ironic choice as Nelson spent most of his time in combat with the French fleet. In the centre are the Nelson armorials, and various dates occur, including 14th February. The original service remained in Lady Hamilton`s possession until 1813, when she was forced by the state of her finances to sell all her effects.
