The “civil†class of the Pour le Mérite was instituted by the King ofPrussia Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1842, after the proposal of Alexander von Humboldt and became one of the most prestigious and exclusive awards for merits in the field of Sciences and Arts. The order, as a foundation exists also now. The pieces before 1918 and especially those from the 19th Century, aremost rare.

An extremely rare set, in the best French quality, extremely fine condition. This Order, of which is not known a date of institution, is not connected to the Greek State, but directly awarded by the Head of the Greek Orthodox Church, is kept in the highest consideration and importance, it is awarded to highest personalities, in recognition of outstanding merits in the defence of Christianity.
