From a private New York collection; formerly in a private Cologne, Germany collection; acquired in the 1990s. Spink and retrieved from his personal writing desk, comprising: (A) three English lead-alloy medieval pilgrim badges being: (i) a standing mailed figure with sword in left hand and mitre-style headdress, possibly depicting St Thomas Beckett, affixed below (ii) a delicate Gothic 'triptych' type openwork tracery surround, both mounted on a 19th century card with inked manuscript 'Queenhithe 1867' inscription; with (iii) another openwork pilgrim badge with small card label bearing inked manuscript 'Steel Yard 1863 / 623 Part' inscription in two lines; (B) an original photograph mounted on card showing a family group sitting in a veteran car with two other ladies standing alongside and bearing the inked manuscript 'Charles Frederick Spink / at the wheel of / the first car in Chislehurst' inscription in three lines to the reverse; (C) a modern photograph of Charles Spink's personal writing desk; (D) a Spink & Son Ltd Exhibition of Ancient Sculptures Vases and Bronzes, catalogue, undated but refers to '...difficulties arising out of War conditions.....' so believed to be from the 1914-1919 period; (E) a Spink & Son Ltd Illustrated Catalogue of a Selection of Egyptian and Babylonian Antiques, retail priced catalogue; (F) a Spink & Son Ltd printed flyer relating to 'Old Canton Enamel'; (G) a manuscript letter on printed Spink & Son letterhead on the subject of 'Some Jewish Coins' listing a number of coins with prices, believed to be in the hand of Charles Frederick Spink; (H) a typescript letter signed by A P Oppe on printed Victoria & Albert Museum letterhead with mourning edges following the death of Edward VII, dated 16 December 1910, accepting the gift from Charles Spink of a 'specimen of old Chinese lacquer, illustrating the process of manufacture by super-imposed layers'; (I) two specimens of Chinese lacquer of the same form as described in the V&A letter which same held together in an old envelope with manuscript '3 pieces of Chinese Lacquer in colours' with the '3' struck through; (J) a copper printing plate for the private visiting card of Charles F. Spink of 'FORD BANK / ST LEONARDS ON SEA' in two lines; (K) an early 19th century coin box with top and base formed from two 1799 farthings of George III and containing grains of barley with a card slip bearing the inked manuscript 'Egyptian Barley / 2500 years old' annotation in two lines; (L) a small glass corked phial bearing the inked manuscript label 'Gold Pellets' to the outside; (M) a carved wood ethnographic art phial with linear ornament and side loop, with brass wire binding around neck. See Mitchiner, M., Medieval Pilgrim & Secular Badges, London, 1986; Spencer, B., Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Woodbridge, 2010. 630 grams total, 4-24cm (1 1/2 - 9 1/2"). Property of a Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK, reverend; by inheritance and descent from the collections of Charles Frederick Spink (1878-1945); holder of the Royal Warrant to provide medals for Queen Victoria and dealer in fine arts with the firm Spink & Son; the pilgrim badges found in London at Queenhithe, 1867 and at Steel Yard, 1863. The objects in this group were all the property of Charles Frederick Spink (1878-1945) at the time of his death and were kept in his private writing desk, of 'William and Mary' date (1690-1700); item (C) is a photograph of this desk showing the arrangement of drawers and slots in which the items were held. Charles was a member of his family firm Spink & Son Ltd, long-established dealers and auctioneers in fine arts, antiquities and coins and makers of medals and orders, including for the Royal Family and internationally; the firm famously continues to the present day. The pilgrim badges are interesting, and it is no exaggeration to say that the gothic tracery (item Aii) is a remarkable survival and largely intact (see Spencer, 2010, items 86 and 142 for similar but much smaller specimens of the type"). The armoured figure (item Ai) is of a type which appears in depictions of the martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas Becket, St. Alban (Mitchener, 1986, item 249) or St. Edmund (Mitchener, 1986, item 247) where the physical violence of the martyr's death is emphasised. [13] Fine condition. The pilgrim badges exceptional and rare.

Obt.: 29:Oct:17: æ:9'. 6.70 grams, 20.53mm overall, 17.47mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7, Europe 14.98, Japan 14) (3/4"). 2nd century AD. A bronze plate brooch in the form of a facing owl, the wings and eyes forming cells for enamel infill, feather detailing to the tail; pin and catchplate to the reverse. 5.31 grams, 30mm (1 1/4"). Found near Norton Disney, Lincolnshire, UK, in the 1970s. Very fine condition.

A near pair of large Ralph Wood type pearlware figures of 'Medici' lions, c.1800-10, on faux marble plinths, L. 33.5cmCONDITION: The first lion facing slightly to its left has firing cracks in various places, a crack to the base mostly visible from underneath, a break to the centre of its tail which has been re-glued, a crack appears to run up its right rear leg and there are some occasional flakes to the enamel colours which have been retouched in, there is also a break to the join of its tail to its body with some remnants of glue, the enamelling on the leaf border of the plinth has flaked off in large areas, the second lion facing slightly to its right is of slightly different construction underneath the plinth and the pearlware is less blue in tinge, there are some remnants of gilding to the ball, the tail has been broken off at the join to the body and where it meets the base with some gaps and remnants of glue, there is some occasional flaking and wear to the enamel colour around the edge of the plinth and some firing cracks visible underneath, one of its canines in its upper jaw is missing.

An early Worcester high-footed sauceboat, circa 1752-3, of oval shape, the body embossed with cornucopias of flowers and fruit variously suspended from large purple ribbon bows, a smaller green ribbon, a spray of leaves and a curious fish, the moulding picked out in enamel colours, further drapery festoons embossed and painted around the pedestal foot, the interior border and the centre painted with flowering plants in a mixture of famille verte and famille rose, the rim edged in brown, 22.3cm longCONDITION: Small patches of black speckling to the glaze around the rim, other minor glaze imperfections.

A rare pair of Staffordshire porcelain groups of a cat and a kitten, c.1835-50, H. 7.5 and 7.7cmCONDITION: Provenance - Dennis G. Rice collection of 19th century English porcelain animals.Some fine crazing to the glaze in places. Good quality re-touching to flaking of the black enamel markings of the cats and kittens. The cat looking to its right has restored ears and a shallow splinter chip to the back of the base. The cat looking to its left has a short stained crack to the base. Both groups are covered by a clear lacquer to the figures to prevent flaking.

An enamelled plaque 'The Bluebird' stamped 'Sterling Silver', given by by Donald Campbell to his secretary Kathleen Marie Barry, along with a pair of gilt and silvered metal St Christopher cufflinks and a photograph of them at his desk. plaque 4.5 x 3.5cm.CONDITION: Some nicks and tiny chips to the enamel on the plaque. Scratches to the metal in general, mainly visible to the cornets. 'Samoradok' style blemish en verso. Some giling loss to the cufflinks along with a few scratches, consistant with some wear. Photograph has a small tear and numerous creases.

An enamelled silver St Christopher plaque, designed to be mounted on a dashboard, given by by Donald Campbell to his secretary Kathleen Marie Barry, French maker's mark for JC or JO with maple? leaf in between, 3.25 x 5.75cm.CONDITION: Marks to the metal around the two holes on either end. Numerous tiny scratches to the blue and grey enamel. Scratches and a chip to the black enamel. Grey panels towards the holes are chippe also. Some scratches en verso. Maker's mark JC or JO with maple leaf? in the centre.

A rare Chinese doucai 'lotus flower' jar, Wanli six character mark and probably of the period, (1573-1619), of squat baluster form, painted in underglaze blue with a repeating design of lotus flowers and scrolling tendrils enamelled in green, within lappeted borders and yellow enamel lines, H. 9.5cm, D. 10.8cm, later wood stand and coverCONDITION: There is an old Japanese style gilt filled repair to a large section of the rim of the jar, there is some scratching and wear to the glaze consistent with age and use, there is a visible slightly stained hairline crack running approximately one third of the circumference of the jar along the luting line - visible on the exterior and slightly visible on the interior, some scratching to the glaze on the interior, otherwise in reasonable condition, the wood stand is missing a foot.

A late 20th century lacquered brass Congreve rolling ball clock, with glazed box and three enamel dials, on an ebonised plinth, width 16in. depth 16.5in. height 19.25in.CONDITION: Top glazed panel is missing, main body and movement of the clock is a little dirty with very slight pitting and oxidisation to the horizontal sections but overall looks to be in fair to good condition, no key present but movement complete but not tested for timekeeping, dials all discoloured, lacking its steel ball, some fine cracking running horizontally around the plinth.

A late 19th / early 20th century French bronze and ormolu mantel clock, modelled with Cupid holding a cockerel, with floral painted enamel dial, unsigned eight day movement, on a Sienna marble plinth and ormolu toupie feet, height 15.75in. width 10.25in. depth 6in.CONDITION: Overall in somewhat neglected condition, bronze of the cherub is a good rich chocolate brown but has some green verdigris where the left leg meets the ormolu case, cockerel has a dull ormolu finish, main body of the clock ranges from mid gilt to dark tone with pronounced green oxidisation or verdigris showing on the left side, dial perhaps a little dirty but otherwise looks good, signed CH. Gaultier, Bordeaux, movement looks complete but lacks pendulum and key, very minor fritting around the edges of the marble base, feet a little dull in finish, overall in need some restoration but a very high quality clock.

A late 19th century French ormolu and Sevres style porcelain mantel clock, surmounted with Cupid beside two lovebirds, with Vincenti eight day signed countwheel movement, the Sevres plaques painted with cherubs and flowers, width 9.75in. depth 5in. height 10.25in.CONDITION: Overall a little dirty and dusty but underneath that in good order, ormolu is a mid gold slightly matted tone, a little dirtier on the upper surfaces, enamel dial looks original but numerous hairline cracks and a small loss near 4 o'clock, hour hand present but no minute hand, does not appear to have ever been glazed, porcelain plaques good, one small section of beading loose from the left hand side but still present, feet a little wobbly, comes with pendulum but no key, movement looks complete but not tested for timekeeping.
