The presence of midnight blue enamel appears in Indian jewels and objets d'art from the second half of the nineteenth century and Cartier's record for this particular cigarette case suggests that the plaque was of genuine Indian origin having come from an 'Indian box' that entered Cartier's stock on 21st August 1911.
