* King's Messenger Badge. A William IV period King's Messenger Badge, the silver gilt and enamel crowned badge with painted coat of arms encased with glass within 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' garter, silver-gilt back plate with silver greyhound pendant and blue silk neck cravat (Qty: 1)The first King's Messenger was John Norman who was appointed in 1485 by King Richard III to hand deliver secret documents and later during the exile of Charles II, the King appointed four trusted men to convey messages to Royal forces in England. As a sign of authority, the King broke four silver greyhounds from a bowl familiar to royal courtiers and gave one to each man, hence the silver greyhound pendant attached to the badge which a symbol of the service.

He continued his training in HMS Cornwall and HMS Britannia joining HMS Drake as Act.Sub. Lt in 1914, followed by serving in Destroyers before joining HMS Dolphin for submarine service in 1916. He remained in submarines until 1940 and during his submarine service he has served in 12 different submarines, being commanding officer of 2 submarines (H22 and L21).

(Military) Knight Commander's 2nd type set of insignia, comprising neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel, star silver and enamel with vertical pin Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R., silver-gilt and enamel with integral top riband bar, with Garrard case of issue, the lid has been privately embossed with gilt lettering 1914-1915 Star, naming erased but ...ll is still visible British War and Victory Medal (Capt. R.A. Hornell. R.N.) with MID oakleaves French Croix de Guerre with swords and palm, reverse dated 1914-1917, generally good very fine or better, court mounted as worn together with a copied photograph of Sir Robert in full dress wearing medals plus copied research (Qty: 5)D.S.O. London Gazette 8 March 1918 'for services in Destroyer and Torpedo Boat Flotillas during the period ending 31st December, 1917' Capt. Robert Arthur Hornell, R.N. Sir Robert was awarded the DSO whilst serving in HMS Nimrod 'for long and distinguished service in the Harwich Destroyer Flotillas including the action with 11 enemy destroyers on the 10/5/17', the king personally bestowed these decorations. M.I.D. London Gazette 22 May 1917 'in recognition of their services in the Destroyer Patrol Flotilla, Armed Boarding Steamers, & c. during the period which ended on the 30 th September, 1916' Croix de Guerre London Gazette 17 May 1918 K.B.E. London Gazette 1 July 1941 Vice-Admiral Sir Robert Athur Hornell (1877-1949) was born in Larkhall Rise, Clapham, he was educated at Cheam School and HMS Britannia, he joined the Royal Navy in 1892 and was commissioned Lieutenant in 1900 and advanced to Commander in 1912 commanding HMS Rother, he commanded various ships during the Great War including the First Class Torpedo Boat T.B.14 (1914) and HMS Laforey in 1916 for which the ship was involved in substantial night action on 26/27 October. He was promoted to Captain of the Seventh Destoyer Flotilla on 1 October 1918. Post war service saw him as the commanding officer in HMS Princess Margaret which was a minelaying vessel in the Atlantic Fleet during the 1920s amonst other appointments including Naval ADC to the King. Sir Roberts WWII service saw him Commodore of Convoys (HMS Eagket II ) and in charge of 12 merchant ships in Operation Menace (attack on Dakar) between 23-25 September 1940, there is a typed copy of a diary kept by Admiral Hornell for the period of 26 February 1941 which covers three attacks on Convoy OB 290 in which he described air and submarine attacks by the enemy. Hornell retired from service in 1944.
* Tank Corps. A small collection of items relating to 2nd Lieutenant Eric Coleman, Norfolk Regiment Later Tank Corps who was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele, comprising a large black and white portrait photograph of 2nd Lieutenant Coleman presented in a period glazed frame with accompanying Tank Corps cloth badge and inscribed '2/Lt Eric Coleman. Norfolk Regiment, Tank Corps. Killed in Action 31st July 1917.', frame size 56.5 x 45cm together with a Norfolk Regiment field service side cap and another for home service, each with regimemtal badge and buttons plus a related regimental enamel and sweetheart badge (Qty: 4)2nd Lieutenant Eric Coleman was the son of the Late Captain Coleman and Mrs George Drury Coleman, he was a native of Acle in Norfolk but resided in Wakefield. He initially served on the Western Front with 3rd Battalion Norfolk Regiment but was then attached to the Machine Gun Corps serving with the Tank Corps. Coleman was killed in action during the first day of the Battle of Passchendale (31 July 1917). According to his family his tank became stuck and he got out to assess the terrain and he and his tank were hit by an enemy artillery shell. Coleman is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate Memorial), Belgium
