To the base, ‘Jiangxi Ciye Gongsi’.Provenance: French trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, occasional light scratches, little rubbing to enamels.Weight: 3,217 g and 3,263 gDimensions: Height 41.8 cm and 41.9 cm Xu Shanqin was a Chinese porcelain artist who was active during the late 19th and early 20th century and specialized in qianjiang painting. The Jiangxi Porcelain Company (or Jiangxi Ciye Gongsi) is the most well-known Chinese porcelain studio of the first half of the 20th century, located in Jingdezhen. It was established in circa 1910 as a large semi-government company funded by private owners and the five provinces of Hebei, Hubei, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi. It is located near the Zhushan – the Pearl Hill – adjacent to the former Imperial porcelain workshops. It is often said that the Jiangxi Porcelain Company of the early 20th century replaced the Imperial kilns, making porcelains for the court in the last years of the Qing Dynasty.Qianjiang is a term used to describe a type of over-glaze enameled ware that was very popular during the Late Qing/Early Republican Period. The term Qianjiang cai (enamels) or Qianjiang porcelain was only coined in the 1950s. Prior to that, annals or commentaries in the late Qing and Republican periods did not classify it as a new distinctive type of over-glaze enamel decorative technique on porcelain. The term was initially used to describe a distinct style of landscape painting by the Yuan master Huang Gongwang. It is typified by the use of a particular color scheme: varying ink tones for outlines and reddish-brown for other aspects such as foliage, flowing water, mountain shades etc. The term was subsequently used to describe a porcelain painting style that used similar techniques but with additional colors such as aquamarine, moss green, pale blue, red and light pink. The relationship between qianjiang and fencai painting has caused quite a bit of confusion. In terms of the decorating medium, qianjiang utilizes fencai enamels. The main difference is actually the source of inspiration for the painting because the Qianjiang school draws its inspiration from the Chinese literati style, whereas the typical fencai work is more akin to gongbi painting. For fencai painting, the areas within the outlines of the motif are first applied with an arsenic-based opaque white pigment. The deeper and lighter tones are then obtained by mixing the enamels with different amounts of this opaque substance. For Qianjiang, the enamels are applied directly without the opaque white pigment. Hence, the enamels are thin and lack tonal gradations, especially on the early qianjiang works.

These types of small cloisonné vases, censers, and instruments (luping sanshi) which were made for the burning of incense had an additional character below the reign mark and were made for the Qianlong court. Some scholars have suggested that the fifth character under the Qianlong mark could have been a way to number the large group of objects in the correct order, see H. Brinker and A. Decorated around the exterior with bands of lotus blooms borne on meandering leafy scrolls between bats, ruyi and stylized lappet bands, all reserved on a deep turquoise ground. To each box, a collector’s label, ‘Lally & Co. New York’ with handwritten inventory number ‘4289.’ James J. Lally was a renowned antique dealer and connoisseur, recognized as one of the greatest scholar-dealers of Chinese art, who has been a leader in the field for more than 40 years. After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia University, Lally joined Sotheby’s where he held many positions within the Chinese art department. In 1970 he served as the director of Chinese works of art at Sotheby’s in New York and Hong Kong, and by 1983 was named president of Sotheby’s in North America. In 1986, he founded his namesake gallery, J. J. Lally & Co., at 41 East 57th Street in New York - just a few blocks away from the MoMA, to provide advisory services for keen collectors. Lally fondly recalls the moment, not long after he opened his gallery, when a young man walked through the door with a Shang Dynasty gong-a bronze vessel shaped like a gravy boat-decorated with a dragon and tiger and in beautiful condition. It was, Lally described, “one of the most important objects I ever had in my hands.” The young man said he had inherited it from his father and was not really interested in Chinese art himself. He wanted to buy a sailboat and wondered if the gong was valuable enough to pay for that. “I was very happy to tell him that it was valuable enough to buy two sailboats,” Lally noted. The gallery helped to establish New York as a major center of commerce for Chinese art and allowed Lally to concentrate on his own specific interests, particularly early ceramics, ritual bronze vessels, archaic jade carvings and sculpture. Lally brought a learned approach to his work, publishing detailed, scholarly catalog that have remained important reference guides within the field. This meticulous approach continued when he produced his own exhibitions and catalog. Giuseppe Eskenazi, dubbed the “Godfather of Chinese Antiques,” and one of the world’s most esteemed Chinese art dealers, also spoke highly of Lally for his achievements in the industry, alongside William Chak from Hong Kong, and the Marchant family from London. In the spring of 2023, Christie’s and Bonhams conducted single owner sales of Lally’s collection which broke several auction records.Condition: Excellent condition with expected manufacturing irregularities and wear to gilt, minute hairlines, dents and nicks to enamels. A LARGE FAMILLE-VERTE ‘KUI XING’ BRUSHPOT, BITONG 硬彩魁星筆筒Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: The figures depicted in this brushpot are both scholarly and immortal in their appearance. The standing scholar holding a scroll represents Wenchang Wang, the God of Literature. The elderly man riding the mule depicts Zhang Guolao, whose epithet ‘Lao’ added at the end of his name means ‘old’, and who is often shown riding a donkey or mule. The two attendants holding a lotus flower (‘he’) and box (‘he’) are the Hehe Erxian, typically depicted as boys. The true star in this scene, however, is Kui Xing standing in characteristic pose within a cloud emanating from Zhang Guolao’s head, perhaps mentioned by the elderly scholar in conversation to his colleague, thereby revealing the significance and meaning that this brush pot once had for its original owner.China, Qing dynasty or later. Well potted with gently waisted sides, the exterior painted in bright enamels with gilt highlights to depict two scholars engaged in conversation, one standing and holding a large scroll, his attendant carrying a sack filled with scrolls, the other riding a mule and holding a ruyi scepter, a cloud emanating from his head enclosing Kui Xing, all within a verdant mountainous landscape with gnarled trees, craggy rockwork, and wispy clouds.Provenance: Dutch trade. Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and firing irregularities, including pitting, glaze recesses, firing cracks, and dark spots. Few shallow chips and fritting to the rim.Weight: 2,081 g Dimensions: Diameter 18.9 cm Identified by the writing brush held in his right hand and his iconic 'back-kick' posture, Kui Xing (‘Chief Star’) is a Daoist deity worshipped to obtain academic success. It therefore was auspicious for a scholar to have an item decorated with this figure on his desk, to inspire him in his writing and achievement of examination success. The Chinese character ‘Kui’ is composed of the ideographs for ‘demon’ and ‘ladle’ (or ‘dipper’, as Kui Xing is also associated with the North Star). Kui Xing is often portrayed with a demonic appearance, a hideous face, a horn-like protuberance on his head, and a sinewy body. According to legend, he was once a mortal scholar with outstanding literary skills but was repeatedly failed in the civil service examinations due to his repulsive appearance. Out of frustration and humiliation, Kui Xing threw himself into a river, where he was saved by a mythical beast called ao. He then ascended to the Big Dipper and became the stellar patron of the literati and the God of Literature.Dreaming of Kui Xing the night before the exams was considered an auspicious sign. The candidate who obtained the highest results, known as the First Scholar (zhangyuan), would walk first on a staircase decorated with the ao. Representations of Kui Xing are thus a symbol of literary success and highest achievement at the Imperial examinations. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE MINIATURE CLOISONNÉ HAT STAND, JIAQING 嘉慶掐絲琺瑯花卉紋帽座Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Opinion: This splendid little ‘hat stand’, the perfect receptacle for the finest and smallest brushes, belongs to a rare group of miniature cloisonné scholar’s objects, examples of which only seldomly come up for auction. However, the present lot even stands out from this illustrious group, with its unusually fine enameling, naturalistic subject matter, and the extremely rare hat stand form, including the hallmark apertures.China, 1796-1820. Of cylindrical form, the turquoise ground finely decorated in bright enamels and gilt wire with butterflies and crickets amid leafy sprays of blossoming peony, chrysanthemum, plum, and hibiscus, all framed by a ruyi-head band below the rim and a leafy lappet border above the foot, the body further pierced with quatrefoil apertures. The interior of turquoise enamel. The rim, foot, and base of gilt bronze.Provenance: From a noted English private collection, acquired in the 1970s, and thence by descent to the last owner. Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear and manufacturing irregularities.Weight: 50.8 gDimensions: Height 5.8 cmHat stands made from porcelain first appeared at the beginning of the Jiaqing reign (1796-1820) and were originally conceived as unusually tall, cylindrical vessels only. But commencing later in the Jiaqing period, and through to Daoguang and Tongzhi, these tall vessels were equipped with a number of distinct apertures cut into the body, promoting a flow of air and thus assisting in the removal of odors from the hat, which was placed on top of the vessel. From Guangxu (1875-1908) onwards the apertures slowly disappeared again. The decoration of butterflies and various flowers offers opportunities for symbolic and auspicious meaning. For example, the combination of a butterfly and plum blossom signifies a quest for blissful love. In Daoism, butterflies represented the freedom of the soul.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie’s Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3874Price: HKD 150,000 or approx. A ‘QIANJIANG CAI’ ENAMELED ‘LUSH FORESTS AND HIGH BAMBOO’ PLAQUE, BY JIN PINQING (1862-1908) 金品卿(1862-1908) 淺絳彩《茂林脩竹》瓷板Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: Qianjiang cai or 'pastel palette' enamels reflected the late Qing potter's increasing inability to produce the more technically demanding vibrant colors of the earlier High Qing or the later Republic period. To borrow a modern aphorism however, the determined late Qing artisans turned this 'bug' into a 'feature' – notably the dreamlike faintness of these colors became popular with the melancholy intelligentsia of the time and led to masterworks by the best, with Cheng Men (1833-1908) and Jin Pinqing (1862-1908), the painter of the present lot, being the most renowned. The rectangular plaque painted in orange, green, and blue tones with thinly applied enamels depicting a forest landscape with hills and mountains, bamboo groves and pine trees in the foreground. Two scholars sit conversing in a field while a third approaches them on foot, two houses with a tranquil river running beside it which disappears into the mountains. The plaque with a lengthy dedication written by Wang Fengchi (1824-1898), a scholar and official who was friends with Jin Pinqing and often collaborated with him on porcelain paintings.Inscriptions: Top center, titled ‘Lush Forests and High Bamboo’, signed ‘written by Jin Pinqing’, two seals. Top left, inscribed ‘Some time ago in the Yijin Studio in the capital, I saw an ink painting by the master Wang Jian from Taicang with a lush forest. The landscape was quite unique. The [present] painting was painted for me by Pinqing in the style of porcelain paintings from Zhushan. The paintings complement each other. The ink style is so gentle and mild like a breath of air. The [original] painting was done in the Spring of the Year of Dingchou [corresponding to 1877] in the third year of the Guangxu era. I am very touched, thus I wrote this dedication. Wang Fenchi.’Provenance: Boston trade. Acquired from a private estate.Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, some of the enamels slightly faded and with minor rubbing and minimal losses, and light surface scratches. Weight: 2,651 gDimensions: Image size 26.3 x 40.7 cm. Size incl. frame 34.1 x 48.6 cm.With an associated gilt wood frame. (2)Qianjiang is a term used to describe a type of over-glaze enameled ware that was very popular during the Late Qing/Early Republican Period. The term was subsequently used to describe a porcelain painting style that used similar techniques but with additional colors such as aquamarine, moss green, pale blue, red and light pink.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie’s London, 16 May 2014, lot 1254Price: GBP 18,750 or approx.
