A Victorian gold mounted enamel stickpin depicting a dog, signed W. Essex, 1868, diameter 16 mm and a gilt metal and glass example (2). William Essex (1784-1869) was the master of enamel painting in the mid 19th century. He first exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1818. He was appointed Enamel-Painter to Princess Augusta of Cambridge, Queen Victoria in 1839 and to Prince Albert. He had a son W. B. Essex (1822-1852) who also undertook similar work.
