London Gazette 28.7.1919.The lot comes with the framed warrant for the C.I.E.; MID certificate; Warrant for Lieutenant for the I.M.S.; together with a copy of the Statutes for the Indian Empire; WW2 Identity Card; framed and glazed photograph of him in uniform wearing WW1 medals; and a quantity of reference letters and certificates for Medical Qualifications etc.Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Geddes Tresidder was born on the 15th December 1881. He was educated at Falmouth Grammar School and at the London Hospital. He qualified with the Conjoint diploma in 1906, and held a series of resident appointments, graduating M.B., B.S. in 1907 and passing the entrance examination of the I.M.S. in 1908. During a period of leave in 1911 he proceeded M.D. with obstetrics as his speciality. His preliminary military years ran on into the first world war, and for his services in Mesopotamia he was mentioned in despatches. In 1921 when on postwar leave he joined the London Hospital as a house surgeon in the ear, nose and throat department and thereafter otorhinolaryngology became his chief interest. At various times he studied his speciality on the Continent, especially at Vienna, and in 1931 took the M.S., with E.N.T. as his special subject. On his return to India after WW1 Tressider was allotted to the Bombay presidency as a civil surgeon, and undertook all branches of surgery. He held the major civil surgeoncies of Nasik, Hyderabad, Sindh, and Poona. For some years he was attached to the personal staff of Lord Lloyd, Governor of Bombay, and gained approbation for his handling of that prickly and formidable personage. He was deputed to hold a watching brief when Gandhi was operated on in Poona, and in 1926 was dispatched to Kabul to operate on the mastoid to a member of King Amanullah's family. In 1927 he was appointed C.I.E. None of the newly created chairs in othorhinolaryngology was reserved for I.M.S. officers so he decided to retire prematurely at 50.He commenced general practice in England but was soon appointed to the surgical staff of the Blackheath and Charlton Hospital in South East London. In 1939 he joined the Emergency Medical Service, but from 1940-47 held a commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps as a specialist E.N.T. surgeon serving Woolwich, Netley and Bath. In 1947 he was appointed consulting E.N.T. surgeon to St.Helier's Hospital and senior clinical assistant to the Central London Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital. In 1946, when his son Gerald, now consultant surgeon to the London Hospital was demobilised from the I.M.S., Colonel Tresidder decided at the age of 65 to pace his son in the primary and final examinations for the English surgical fellowship. Both were successful in both. In 1957 he finally retired from St.Helier's but for a number of years did locums for E.N.T. surgeons and worked at the Post Office for the Treasury Medical Service. He died on the 9th July 1970.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

London Gazette 1.1.1941.M.I.D. London Gazette 16.4.1901.Lieutenant Colonel Charles Hyde Villiers was born on the 21st September 1862, he went to school at Chatham and then R.M.A. Sandhurst. He was commissioned on the 23rd November 1887. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1889. In 1892 he was seconded into the Unyoro Campaign in support of the Sultan of Zanzibar whose lands and protectorates stretched as far as Lake Rudolph in East Africa, a vast area which at that time was in some turmoil from German and other influences and interventions. With the success of the campaign and a short period of 'ciivil' administration he was honoured with the Bright Star of Zanzibar. He returned to the Regiment in 1894 and was promoted to Captain on the 22nd December 1894. He was seconded for a second time, just three months later, but now into a situation that might have been disastrous for his career; part of the duties of an officer on overseas secondment, particularly in areas of interest would be to discover 'the lie of the land', and perhaps 'to get involved'. His secondment was to the Chartered British South Africa Company, founded and run by Cecil Rhodes. This was the ideal place and time to achieve those two aspects of military intelligence that would be much needed in the event of the threatening war with the Boers. Villiers ultimate involvement in the Jameson Raid, although not recorded in the Regimental history, is not a matter of conjecture, being noted by Elizabeth Longford in her history 'Jameson's Raid', and confirmed by a photograph of Villiers with Jameson and his surviving officers during the enforced journey on board ship back to Great Britain for the judicial sentencing that the Boers demanded after their capture and imprisonment, and eventual release to the British Government. He was received back into the Royal Horse Guards with the rank of Brevet Major, being confirmed Major in 1897. With the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899, he found himself on the way to South Africa for the third and final time, principally to help form the South African Light Horse, one of two yeomanry cavalry regiments being formed from refugee Uitlanders (British subjects forced out of the Transvaal and other territories) each of about 2,000 men.General Buller, on landing in South Africa to take command of the British Forces, enquiring how these regiments were progressing, was plainly 'disappointed' that his staff officer, who had preceded him Lt Col Charles a Court had already appointed Villiers as Lt Col of the South African Light Horse, as he was aware that Villiers 'had ridden with Jameson in the Raid'. Villiers is however recorded as Major as well as second in command of the South African Light Horse, but also as 'employer' of that Regiment, signifying some governmental acceptance of his position and a back handed compliment against Bullers' slight. It is noticeable that Villiers' other responsibility was that of Intelligence Officer. His service in South Africa was distinguished, being mentioned in despatches, fighting along the Tugela and into the Relief of Ladysmith, where, rather ironically, some of his fellow officers of the raid were 'holed-up' attending to their new commercial interests in South Africa. He returned to Great Britian in 1901 to marry Lady Victoria Alexandrina Innes-Kerr, a daughter of the Duke of Roxburghe. He retired from the Royal Horse Guards on the 13th May 1903 and became an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) later the same year. He became a Gentleman-at-Arms in 1907. He remains with the Yeomanry for WW1 and his MIC notes that he serves in the Dardenelles from the 12th April 1915. He died on the 23rd May 1947.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
