Edward worked for the same company as his father until his wedding in 1873. He had taken a job as a surveyor to work on the construction of railways in Japan, for the Meiji government. Three years later his contract expired and he won an appointment in the surveyor general's office in Hong Kong. The family were well off and able to afford luxuries, including Japanese and Chinese porcelain, which they brought back to the UK just a few months later.
