An officer’s Albert pattern helmet, 1842-71, of the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues), plated skull, gilt peak binding, acanthus foliage to front and back peaks, top mount, leather backed chinchain and large ear rosettes, gilt helmet plate with silver plated cut star and red and blue enamel (restored) to pierced Garter centre, red hair plume with large rosette, leather lining. Good Condition, the gilt generally sound (light wear and distressing to skull). Plate 3
A post-1902 officer’s bearskin of The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), white cut feather plume to right, gilt grenade badge in the centre of which a rose within crowned pierced Garter with blue enamel backing, silver plated Horse of Hanover below, leather backed graduated link brass chinchain, leather lining. A silver and enamel topped cylindrical glass smelling salts bottle, the hinged cover decorated with the portrait of a lady, Birmingham 1898, a silver footed glass small stand, Birmingham 1942, six enameled souvenir spoons, with the crests of various places in Australia, cased, a plated spoon, detailed RMS QUEEN MARY and four further spoons, relating to Canada and the U.S.A.
An interesting Royal Flying Corps greetings card, bearing gilt RFC badge and motto on the front, the inside with skull and crossbones and “Greetings and Good Luck from Jimmy” and with a photograph of Vickers “Gun Bus” number “A852”, annotated below in ink “Alas poor old “852”, Reported missing Jan 1918, Jimmy”; also a gilt and enamel RFC wings pin back brooch and a similar “Sterling Silver” RAF brooch. A gentleman’s 18ct gold keywound lever open face pocket watch, the circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and heart-shaped hands, the three-quarter backplate inscribed ‘u i c m Vulliamy London in a plain 18ct gold case with hallmarks for London 1822, together with a plain tapering ratchet watch key.
T.Fontana & Sons. An early 20th century French gold and diamond mounted small fob watch, the circular white enamel dial, 19mm diameter with Roman numerals, the back cover pave-set with old brilliant-cut diamonds estimated to weigh a total of 1.5cts, the keyless cylinder movement with wolf-tooth winding, the dust cover inscribed T, Fontana & Cie, Palais Royal 93 & 94, Paris.
Army & Navy, An 18ct gold minute repeating half-hunter chronograph pocket watch, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, subsidiary dials for sixty seconds and sixty hours a sweep centre seconds hand with stop and reset button in the band and numbered ‘9208’, with blued steel spade hands, the movement with split bi-metallic free-sprung compensating balance with an over-coil hairspring to the lever escapement, the repeat mechanism with two gongs, activated by a slide in the band, with the three-quarter backplate engraved ‘Army & Navy Co-Operative Society Ltd, 9208, 105, Victoria St, London, SW’, in a half-hunter case with swivel-bow blue enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals and monogram, hallmarks for London 1905 and with repeat serial number and initials ‘F.T’ for the case maker Fred Thoms, 55mm diameter. * Fred Thoms, is considered one of the finest case maker’s of his generation. He developed the ‘swivel’ bow as an anti-theft device as seen on this example.
An early/mid 19th century enamelled gold and ruby mounted necessaire, with needle case, scissors, thimble, scent flask and propelling scribe, decorated with red, blue, white and opalescent enamel and highlighted with small collet-set cabochon rubies and contained in a tooled leather fitted case.
A. J. Valery, Paris A 19th Century ebonised and brass inlaid portico clock on shaped supports and cushion moulded base, the white enamel dial having Roman numerals, and signed ‘J. Valery a Paris’, the eight day duration movement with outside count wheel, striking the hours & half hours on a bell, with scroll decorated gilt metal grid iron pendulum, height 56cm.
Japy Freres a Paris An unusually shaped ‘four-glass’ mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong and having a twin tube mercury compensating pendulum, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker ‘Japy Freres’, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel ‘moon’ hands, the arched brass ‘four-glass’ case having fluted pillars to the corners and engraved decorative bands to the top and base, height 40cm. * For details of Japy Freres see lot no. 664 .
Japy Freres a Paris A French enamel-set four-glass mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the roulant blank maker ‘Japy Freres a Paris’, the gilded brass pendulum bob having champleve enamel to the centre and set with white and green glass stones, the gilded dial having Arabic hour numerals, blued steel hands and champleve enamel to the centre and further white & green stones set within the bezel, the Corniche style brass four-glass case having enamel to the top and lower bands, height 29cm. * Japy Freres was founded by Frederic Japy of Beaucount (born 1749), who first made movements for the clock industry at his factory in 1777, becoming the largest & most commercially important clockmaking concern in France. The business continued after his death by his sons.
Martin Baskett a Paris A French marble and gilt metal mounted mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the name ‘Martin Baskett a Paris’, the gilt-metal chapter ring having Roman numerals set on enamel plaques and with decorative blued steel hands, the white marble case having fluted, curved sides and surmounted by a spelter figure depicting a young boy astride a goat, height 50cm. * Martin Basket was a retailer in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire who imported French clocks, often signed with the company’s name.
Vincenti et Cie a Paris A three piece clock garniture, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Vincenti et Cie, the white enamel dial having black Arabic numerals, floral swags between the numerals and decorative gilt brass hands, the white marble case having a classical female figure to one side and a winged cherub to the other, with applied classical mounts to the front, sides and a front frieze depicting a musical scene, the two three-light candelabra side pieces having a winged cherub of each standing on white marble columns with applied gilt mounts, height: 41cm. * For details of Vincenti see lot no. 656
A French marble and bronzed mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel ‘moon’ hands, set within a brass drum case with the figure of a girl playing with a cat to one side and all sitting on a shaped black and verigrated green marble base, height 33cm.
William Braund, Dartford A Regency mantel clock, the eight day duration, timepiece fusee movement having an anchor escapement, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and blued steel hands (one missing), the mahogany case having brass inlay to the front, height 34cm. * William Braund is recorded as working in Dartford, Kent from circa 1823 until 1855.
Vincenti et Cie A French boulle mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours & half hours on a gong with the backpate stamped with the trademark of the maker ‘Vincenti et Cie, Paris’, the brass dial having black Roman numerals to the individual enamel cartouches, with blued steel hands, the waisted tortoiseshell boulle case inlaid with engraved brass decoration, with cast brass mounts to the front and sides and to the shaped, glazed front door, height 48cm. *For details of Vincenti see lot no. 656
