The final took place at Firhill Park in Glasgow on the 29th April before a crowd of 18,000. After some fine play McLaughlin scored the opening goal for Morton. The score remained 1-0 at half time. This was the first of three times Clyde won the trophy.

He was rejected by local Junior club, Cambusland Rangers for being too small, instead starting his career with Baillieston. In 1956 he came to the attention of Rangers, signing his first contract with the club.He was an integral part of the successful Rangers side of the early 1960s, winning four League Championships (only receiving two medals due to not playing the minimum required games in the other two), five Scottish Cups, two Legue Cups, and reaching two UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals (playing in one).Wilson was ever-present during the 1960-61 season playing every minute of every match (60 in total) and scoring 23 goals.Wilson left the club in 1967 at the age of 30, going on to play for Dundee United and Dumbarton before retiring in 1973.
