Portrait MiniatureA finely painted portrait on ivory of a gentleman in brown coat and white cravat, indistinctly initialled 'IL'to the reverse, a glass mounted mourning arrangement of hair, enamel and seed pearls with the initials 'WR'Early 19th century6.7x5.7cmMounted in an ebonised frameCondition report: The portrait itself is in good condition, colours are bright and there is only the tiniest spot of paint loss visible next to the initials. The hair and pearl panel needs some restoration, the glue holding it together has slightly deteriorated and some of the pearls are missing. The hair seems good though.
An early 19th-century oval mourning portrait miniature on ivory of a gentleman. Monogrammed F.H and dated 1806, within a gold plated frame with loop suspension and blue guilloche enamel border and vacant hair panel to the reverse. 9 cm x 6 cm. Together with other 19th and 20th portrait miniatures both printed and painted.Condition report: Some slight flaking of paint from the bottom of the coat of the primary miniature. A pair of Flight and Barr Worcester jardinières, circa 1800Of tapering cylindrical form, finely painted with panels of shells and colourful seaweed arranged on a stone shelf, possibly by Samuel Smith, reserved on an orange ground with fine neoclassical gilding, a wide band of triangular 'Greek key' gilding below the rims, the moulded ring handles also picked out in gold, 15.8cm high, incised B mark (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Otto M Wasserman, 1969With Earle D Vandekar of Knightsbridge, Inc.Twinight CollectionIllustrated by Henry Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978), p.62, pl.47.The shell painting and the arrangement of the fine filaments of the seaweed is very similar to that on the documentary shell-painted jug by Samuel Smith, signed and dated 'S.S. 1807' and sold by Phillips, 16 December 1998, lot 360. See John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), colour plate 77. It is most useful to compare these jardinières with the cabinet cup sold by Bonhams on 17 May 2017, lot 371. Not only is the purple shell almost identical to that on the present lot but the thick seaweed with dabs of white enamel to create surface texture is a distinctive and effective trait in each case. William Bate (fl c1799-c1845) after Jean Petitot-Anne 'Ninon' de l'Enclos (1620-1705), signed on the counter enamel Painted by W Bate Painter in Enamel to HRH Princess Elizabeth from Petitot's in the King's Collection of the Ninon de L'enclos, turned contraposto in a blue robe and pearl necklace and pearl filet, 4.8 x 4cm, gold frame Provenance: Sold in these 'rooms 13 September 2013, £1573 The original miniature attributed to Petitot is in the Louvre (No.35715). The subject was a favourite of 18th and 19th century copyists and recorded examples include another in enamel by Henry Bone, signed and dated 1807 set in the lid of a gold snuff box (Wallace Collection, London). Further examples are in the Victoria & Albert Museum (No 940-1868) and the Musee Condé, Chantilly. Anne 'Ninon' de l'Enclos (1620-1705) was one of the brightest ornaments of 17th century Parisian life. She embodied beauty, wit and influence at the highest levels of society. A free thinker, author and courtesan, she lived to be over 80 and amassed great wealth In fine condition set in a plain narrow later gold frame
