Ashley & Sims, Clerkenwell An 18 carat gold open-faced keyless pocket watch, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and signed ‘Ashley & Sims, 2 Green Terrace, Clerkenwell’, the three-quarter plate movement having a lever escapement with a split bimetallic balance and engraved backcock, the backplate signed as the dial and numbered ‘05489’, the plain open faced case engraved to the back with the letter ‘G’ and hallmarked for 18 carat gold, London 1871, diameter 50mm. * Edward F. Ashley is recorded as working at 2, Green Terrace, Clerkenwell, London from before 1878 until 1913.
Breguet et Fils. An early 19th century enamelled gold Turkish market pair cased pocket watch, the removable movement with dust cover inscribed ‘Breguet et Fils 24412’, the white enamel dial, 33mm diameter, with repeat signature contained in a polychrome enamelled case with arms and lances on a red enamelled ground, the inside cover numbered 24411, the outer case similarly enamelled.
A 19th century moss agate and gilt metal mounted rectangular snuff box, the hinged lid with applied circular enamel panel depicting a King Charles Spaniel, 7.5cm. wide. *Provenance: Crabbet Park, West Sussex, the enamel probably the work of Judith Anne Dorothea Blunt, Baroness Wentworth (1873-1957).
Joseph Soldano, Paris, a French repeating carriage clock having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a gong, with push repeat, the platform lever escapement stamped to the underside with the makers name and number ‘Soldano, 5139’, the backplate stamped with the serial number ‘7161, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals with blued steel hands and signed for the retailer ‘Christian Lange, 291 Regent Street, London’, having a variant Anglaise/Gorge gilt-brass case with carrying handle, height: 16.5 cm (handle up); 14cm (down). * Joseph Soldano was known as a maker of fine carriage clocks having been awarded medals at the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 & 1878 where it was noted that ‘...the exhibition of this establishment showed substantial progress in the art of case decoration. On show were a group of carriage clocks ornamented with great taste and originality. The escapements appeared to us to have been treated with particular care.” They are particularly well known for the high quality of their escapements which where in all probability made in Geneva, Switzerland and were stamped by Soldano as in this example.
A French ormolu and marble clock garniture having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the white enamel dial having black Arabic numerals with painted floral swags between and engraved brass hands, the variegated pink marble and ormolu shaped case having a glazed front showing the visible pendulum bob, the moulded base with curved sides each with a putti seated, with applied floral mounts to the front and sides, the movement within an ormolu drum above and surmounted with a cast mount of classical design, complete with matching side pieces, height: 44cm.
