A Chinese Canton enamel box and cover, 18th/19th century, the cover decorated with a shou symbol in the centre, surrounded by five bats signifying happiness, and foliage all over within a ruyi-head borders, and lotus petal border to the pedestal base, 15cm diameter, 10cm high. Notes: Bat translates as 'bian fu' in Chinese, 'fu', in the same pronunciation also means lucky and happiness, therefore, five bats, translates as 'wu fu qi tian', together with shou, means 'fu shou an kang' in Mandarin.

Note: William Johnson and Samuel Grimalde are recorded as working together at 431 Strand, London between 1809 and 1825. William Johnson is later recorded to have worked at 50 Strand, London from 1825 to 1842, indicating their partnership was dissolved in 1825.
